Lower
Slash's Snakepit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

lower than the bottom
swallowed by the ride
fleating in thr bathtub
children play outside

so tell me how to do it
how to do what i'm gonne do
how to take the knife
from inside of you
baby, now you're lower too

you looked do unhappy
squatting in some stall
and it gets even better
when all the lights are off

so tell me how to do it
how to do what i'm gonne do
how to keep the life inside of you
baby, now you're lower too

what were you realy thinking
what did you need
couse all those wounds forever bleed

drink me
it's a nightmare
it's thr needle in your veins

so tell me how to do it
how to do what i'm gonne do
how to take the knife
from inside of you
baby, now you're lower too

so tell me how to do it
how to do what i'm gonne do
how to keep the life inside of you
baby, now you're lower too

burning every memory
it's gonna eat your insides out and
throw it out on me

struggling, heaven help you
staring down the barrel

of your own gun
and now you're lower too

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of "Lower" by Slash's Snakepit paints a picture of despair and hopelessness. The singer is at his lowest point, feeling swallowed by life's ride and alone as children play outside. He is in such a dark place that he asks for guidance on how to take a knife out of someone, leaving them also "lower" like he is. The second stanza takes things darker as he finds someone else who is unhappy, squatting in a bathroom stall. Things "get even better" when the lights are off, as if the darkness and the misery is what they crave. The singer asks again how to keep life inside this person, taking on this sense of despair as if it were a mission he can't seem to abandon.

The song seems to be about two people totally lost in their own darkness. They are not necessarily seeking out each other but they are both lost within themselves. The imagery of a knife suggests self-harm, addiction and depression as a manifestation of the suffering they are experiencing. It is unclear whether there is any hope for either person, but their own despair is spilling over into the lives of each other.
