walk don't run
Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't walk away from me darling is that the way it has to be darling
Can't we start our love anew don't tell me our love is through
Oh darling please don't walk away
Now that you want to go darling I realize I love you so darling
Don't turn your back on me I don't want to be set free
Oh darling please don't walk away

I know now I put everything above you so how were you to really know I love you
Yes I was blind but now I see that you say you still love me
And darling please don't walk away
Don't walk away from me darling is that the way it has to be darling

Can't we start our love anew don't tell me our love is through
Oh darling please don't walk away my darling tell me that you'll stay

I heard The Ventures' version first, but the minute I heard this take, some years later, I felt that it just left all later treatments in the dust. Except in guitar circles, there are other names you hear before Johnny Smith's, but he was truly one of the all-time greats -- a prodigiously talented and original player. He based this composition on the chord changes of Sigmund Romberg's "Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise," from the operetta, New Moon .

I didn't know about this original until a few minutes ago

And the story is that Johnny’s wife had died and he had a young daughter to take care of. So he had to stop playing all his late night gigs. But he became a proficient pilot and was able to become a flying instructor. But one day he was giving a lesson, and while putting down the seat after letting a student get in the plane, it smashed his hand. Now his hand was all bandaged up, and could neither fly a plane or play guitar, and looked bleak as far as income. But one day shortly after the injury, he opens his mailbox and finds a huge royalty check because the Ventures version of Walk Don’t Run was now playing all over the airwaves. True story. Met him and got my picture taken with him when he was honored at the Jazz Guitar Greats show at the Sylvia and Danny Kaye Theater at Hunter College back in the 90’s. What a nice man ! Always loved his playing.

VERY Cool! The Ventures' version will always be the one I remember, but this original jazz version is EXTREMELY cool!!!!!

Interesting history lesson. I first heard the origins of this song on a guitar lesson tutorial. Amazing how The Ventures transformed this into a rockin' classic. The great thing about playing guitar is that we never stop learning...

Never heard version before and it sounds good.

I grew up with the Ventures' version. This is a nice, jazzy original.

I was in Johnny's music store in Colorado Springs along about 1974. I picked up a Les Paul and started noodling this tune as played by the Ventures. Johnny called out to me and said, "You need to play that in double stops the way it was written." Absently I said, "Do you know this one, Johnny?" Number one on the list of dumbest things I've ever said.
