Kansas City
Sneaky Sound System Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you're coming home and it?s getting late
I was unwritten fate
Two eyes light up the screen
Ooh, the prettiest face you?ve ever seen
You-ooh in the depleting light
Tip-toe through in the middle of the night
You say ?I want what you got? ohh
And the rocket launch starts the show

(Chorus)
Somebody in Kansas City loves me
Somebody is waiting by the telephone
Somebody in Kansas City loves me
Somebody is waiting too all alone

Hey,
Now listen
I?m a figure of eight
You can catch me and y?all wouldn?t choose
But clock is ticking 1,2,3,4,5 I?m late
Oh I, forgot to mention
He?s like that thin man with the big heart
It ?aint easy
He loves me
And the rocket launch starts the show

(Chorus)
Somebody in Kansas City loves me
Somebody is waiting by the telephone
Somebody in Kansas City loves me
Somebody is waiting to all alone

Oh Oh, Oh Oh, Oh Oh
Oh Oh, Oh Oh, Oh Oh

Oh Oh (somebody)
Oh Oh (somebody)
Oh Oh (somebody in Kansas City)
Oh Oh (somebody)
Oh Oh (somebody)
Oh Oh (somebody in Kansas City)

(Chorus)
Somebody in Kansas City loves me
Somebody is waiting by the telephone
Somebody in Kansas City loves me
Somebody is waiting too all alone

Alone (somebody)
Oh Oh (somebody)
Oh Oh (in Kansas City)
Oh Oh (somebody)
Oh Oh (somebody)
Oh Oh (loves me, loves me)
Oh Oh (somebody)
Oh Oh (somebody)
Oh Oh (in Kansas City, Kansas City)
Oh Oh (somebody)
Oh Oh (somebody)

Oh Oh (loves me, loves me)
(fade out)

Overall Meaning

In "Kansas City," Sneaky Sound System creates a story about a person who is heading home late at night and comes across someone on the screen who is immediately captivating. It's apparent that the person is infatuated with whoever is on the other side of the screen. The song then shifts to another character, possibly the same voice, who describes themselves as a "figure of eight" and implies they are late for something. They are also loved by someone in Kansas City who is waiting by the telephone, demonstrating the power of love and the distance it can traverse.

The Kansas City location is used as a symbol of longing and love, a place where someone yearns for the return of the person they love. The lyrics capture the anticipation and emotion of waiting for someone's return and the hope that can come with knowing that someone loves you from afar. The line "He's like that thin man with the big heart" is a powerful metaphor for emotional growth, as it implies that even someone who may not have a lot physically can have a big heart and a lot of love to give.

@1978SOOTY

I listen to Sneaky still almost every day and I'm a metal head. I got to see them live in Byron Bay, N.S.W. and The Potbelleez around the same time. Amazing band, amazing music, awesome stage presence and still played in the clubs to this very day. Even my kids now get to rock out on the dance floor to the Sneaky Sound System. GG guys.

@jacoblong9393

Same Born and raided Metal Head but when I came across this band or any Female Lead or solo singer with a voice of this calibre I am easily hooked.

@bloubear2557

I wanna make this band mainstream so bad :(
