So far away
Social Distortion Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've sung the blues,
For every broken hearted lovesick dream
For you,
I've paid my dues,
Workin' hard-sweat, blood and tears for you

So far away, so far away
I've had it all,
And lost it all in one blackout night
I want it back,
But I just can't seem to get it right

So far away, so far away
I've sung the blues,
For every broken hearted lovesick dream
For you,

I've paid my dues,
Workin' hard-sweat, blood and tears for you

Overall Meaning

The central theme of Social Distortion's So Far Away revolves around the feeling of longing and inadequacy, despite having put in immense effort to achieve something. The opening lines "I've sung the blues, for every broken hearted lovesick dream for you" suggest that the singer has been singing songs of despair and romanticism, as he has been hurt in love. The repetition of "For you", possibly suggests that the singer has put in a massive effort to win the affection of somebody, to no avail.

The lines "So far away, so far away" suggest a sense of distance and separation, both physical and emotional, from the person the singer is addressing. In the next verse, the singer laments having acquired and then lost everything in one night of debauchery. He desires to have everything back but seems resigned to his inability to get it right.

The closing lines "For you, I've paid my dues, workin' hard-sweat, blood and tears for you" reiterate the central theme of the song. Despite all the singer's efforts, he still feels so far away from the person he is addressing.

These guys are the guys that got me into punk. I saw 'Another State of Mind" documentary, and I was hooked. I was just a kid. Later when I was a teenager, I won a contest and had lunch with Social Distortion. They reaffirmed my love of them. They were as awesome as they sound. Just down to earth super cool guys. The story goes on, but I've said enough. Social D is the s**t!

I was 14 years old (1989), and helped my older cousin wash his truck. He had this song playing LLLLOUD and I was stunned and hooked. All these years later, it sounds as good as it ever did. Mike Ness is brilliant.

Cool story. Unfortunately the album was released in 1990 and recorded in late 1989.
