Those Were The Days
Sons of Maxwell Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do
Those were the days my friend
We'd thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose
Fore we were young
And sure to have our way
La La La La La La La La La La La La
La La La La La La La La La La
La La La La La La La La La La La La
Those were the days, my friend those were the days
Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our stary notions along the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say
Those were the days my friend
We'd thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance
Forever and the day
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose
Fore we were young
And sure to have our way
La La La La La La La La La La La La
La La La La La La La La La La
La La La La La La La La La La La La
Those were the days, my friend those were the days
Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely person really me
Those were the days my friend
We'd thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance
Forever and the day
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose
Fore we were young
And sure to have our way
La La La La La La La La La La La La
La La La La La La La La La La
La La La La La La La La La La La La
Those were the days, my friend those were the days
Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face I heard you call my name
Oh my friends were older but no wiser
Fore in our hearts the dreams are all the same
Those were the days my friend
We'd thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance
Forever and the day
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose
Fore we were young
And sure to have our way
Those were the days my friend
We'd thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance
Forever and the day
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose
Fore we were young
And sure to have our way
Those were the days my friend
We'd thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance
Forever and the day
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days
My friend those were the days
The song "Those were the days" by Sons of Maxwell is a nostalgic reflection on the past, particularly on the joyful and carefree moments shared with friends at a tavern. It is a song that captures the bittersweet feeling of longing for the past, of wishing to relive happy times and a simpler life. The song's narrative follows the singer's journey through time, from the memories of "laughing away the hours" and dreaming of great things to the present reality where things look different, and the person he sees in the reflection is a far cry from the young and carefree version of himself.
The song's central message is about the inevitability of time and how it changes people, but also how some things remain the same, such as the memories and the dreams. The lyrics are characterized by their repetition, which conveys the idea of how the past keeps coming back like a memory that can't be entirely erased. The song's chorus - "those were the days my friend, we'd thought they'd never end, we'd sing and dance forever and the day" - is particularly memorable and emotive. It evokes a sense of yearning for a time when life seemed less complicated and more fun.
Overall, "Those were the days" is a timeless song that appeals to people of different ages and backgrounds. It reminds listeners to hold onto their happy memories and cherish the moments they share with people they love.

Instrumental
Then the busy years went rushing by us
But time quickly passed us by
We lost our stary notions along the way
We lost our idealistic dreams as we grew older
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
If I happened to run into you at the old pub
We'd smile at one another and we'd say
We'd acknowledge each other and reminisce about the past
Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Recently, I stood outside the pub
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
Things had drastically changed
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
My reflection in the glass looked different
Was that lonely person really me
I felt lonely and unsure of my identity
Through the door there came familiar laughter
From inside the tavern, I heard recognizable laughter
I saw your face I heard you call my name
I recognized your face and heard you call out to me
Oh my friends were older but no wiser
My friends had aged, but their wisdom had not increased
Fore in our hearts the dreams are all the same
Because in our hearts, we all still have the same aspirations and desires
Those were the days my friend
Those were the good old days
We'd thought they'd never end
We thought they would last forever
We'd sing and dance
We'd express our joy through music and dance

We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd live life on our own terms
We'd fight and never lose

Those were the days
Those were the good old days
My friend those were the days
My friend, we will always treasure those memories

What a thrilling performance! This is a bridge between English and Russian people, I think. Despite any political situation we are like each other😊

Unfortunately, governments may have a lot to disagree about. People have not or at least they shouldn't.
Thank you so much for your comment.

My friend just passed away last week. He was 38. This was a song that we both loved to listen to as kids while we dreamed of what our future held. This song fills me with memories, sadness, and love. I will miss my friend.

Reminds me of home in God's country Nova Scotia. Downing double draughts and belting this song out arm in arm with friends at the Lower Deck in Halifax. And now I sing this song with my daughter. So surreal. Life is good.
