Smoke Gets in Your Eyes
Souther J.D Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

*Don't let the stars get in your eyes
Don't let the moon break your heart
Love blooms at night
In daylight it dies
Don't let the stars get in your eyes
Oh keep your heart for me
For someday I'll return
And you know (see) you're the only one
I'll ever love

Too many nights, too many stars
Too many moons could change your mind
If I'm gone too long
Don't forget where you belong
When the stars come out
Remember you are mine

(repeat *)

Too many miles, too many days
Too many nights to be alone
Oh please keep your heart
While we're apart
Don't't linger in the moonlight
While I'm gone

(repeat *)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Souther J.D's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" are a gentle plea to a lover to remain faithful and patient while they are apart. The first verse warns against letting the beauty of the night sky distract from a commitment to love, suggesting that love only flourishes at night but withers in daylight. The second verse reinforces this idea, acknowledging the potential for distance and time to change hearts, and asking the beloved not to forget where they belong when the stars shine.

The chorus repeats a refrain about too many stars, too many moons, too many nights, and too many miles that catch the eye and divide the heart. Souther J.D urgently reminds his lover to keep their heart for him while they are separated, and assures them that he will be back one day. The final line is a reminder that he loves them completely and exclusively.

Overall, the lyrics suggest an underlying anxiety about the fragility of commitment and the ways in which distance and time can erode it. It is a plea to maintain trust and loyalty in the face of temptation and uncertainty.

They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
Oh-oh-oh-oh, I, of course, replied
"Something here inside
Cannot be denied" (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
They said, "Someday you'll find
All who love are blind"
Oh-oh-oh-oh
When your heart's on fire
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes
So, I chaffed them
As I gaily laughed
To think they would doubt our love
Yet today, my love has gone away
I am without my love (without my love)
Now, laughing friends deride
Tears, I cannot hide
Oh-oh-oh-oh
So, I smile and say
"When a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes"
Smoke gets in your eyes
Smoke gets in your eyes
Smoke gets in your eyes

Me and my dad watched this movie in the early 90s on TV and I really remember him telling me „If I die, play this song on my funeral“. He passed away last week on 21.01.2021 at the age of 83.
I will fulfill that wish.

Love the song, this is my favorite version. It doesn't hurt that Holly Hunter is easy on your eyes. She looks beautiful in that gown.
