Grandpa's Fiddle
Southern Raised Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was cleaning out the attic
After Grandpa passed away
Lying there in the corner
Was a dusty fiddle case
Well I popped those rusty hinges
And I began to cry
There was Grandpa's fiddle
Lying silently inside

Underneath the veil
In that old fiddle case
I found the note, that Grandpa wrote
Before he passed away
He said, "Child, if you're reading this
I'm already Home.
Now its up to you
To keep the music playing on

I reached for that old fiddle,
I rosined up the bow
I began to play the old songs
He taught me years ago
Like the Old Rugged Cross
And Amazing Grace
That old fiddle still remembered
Every song that Grandpa played

I'm standing here today
With that old fiddle in my hand
I can almost see my Grandpa
Over in the Promised Land
Oh somehow I know he's listen'
In that land so far away
So until I join him
Oh let the music play

I reached for that old fiddle,
I rosined up the bow
I began to play the old songs
He taught me years ago
Like the Old Rugged Cross
And Amazing Grace

That old fiddle still remembered
Every song my Grandpa played

Whew! I'm having a hard time typing this through the tears flowing out of my eyes. I'm a grandpa myself, and raising two of my grandchildren since they were born. The boy is 18 now, and soon headed off to college. The girl is 16, turning 35. I've tried to instill the love of music in them, and happily our house has cellos and violas and a violin in it, along with a mess of guitars and basses, a ukulele, a keyboard and some percussion instruments here and there. We're already starting that inevitable drifting apart, but I hope and pray that after I'm gone they can have me right there with them anytime they need me by just picking up an instrument and playing a song. Thank you for a lovely video and lovely music. You are a blessing!

It made me cry, my late husband loved and played gospel music by ear. He would have loved this song. We don't hear music like this in Church any more, just those funky praise hymns that don't make sense and are hard to sing to. Throw us Seniors a bone occasionally with a Real Hymn.
