I'm All Alone
Spamalot Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

ARTHUR
I'm all alone
All by myself.
There is no one here beside me
I'm all alone
Quite, all alone
No one to comfort me or guide me
Why is there no one here with me
On the long and winding road--
To lift my heavy load?
If there were someone here with me,
How happy I would be
But I'm alone--
Quite all alone
All by myself,
I'm all alone

ARTHUR/PATSY
I'm all alone
(He's all alone)
All by myself
(Except for me)
I cannot face tomorrow
(He cannot face it)
I'm all alone
(Though I am here)
So all alone
(Sovery near)
No one to share my sorrow

PATSY
You know, it seems quite clear to me
Because I'm working class
I am just the horses ass
He sells me down the river
So what am I, chopped liver?

ARTHUR/PATSY
But I'm alone
(Oh,no you're not!)
So all alone
(I'm here you twat!)
All by myself,
I'm all alone

KNIGHTS
He's all alone

ARTHUR
I'm all alone

KNIGHTS
All by himself

ARTHUR
All by myself

KNIGHTS
There is no one here beside him.
He's all alone

ARTHUR
So all alone

KNIGHTS
Apart from us,
No one to comfort him or guide him

ARTHUR
Each one of us is all alone.
So, what are we to do
In order to get through?
We must be lonely side by side--
It's a perfect way to hide.

KNIGHTS
We're all alone

ARTHUR
We're all alone

KNIGHTS
Yes, all alone

ARTHUR
So all alone...

Each by ourselves,
We're all alone.

Overall Meaning

The song "I'm All Alone" from Spamalot is a comedic portrayal of Arthur, King of Britain, feeling isolated and alone on his quest to find the Holy Grail. Arthur laments how he has no one to comfort him or guide him on his journey, expressing his longing for someone to share his sorrows with. However, his loyal companion Patsy is there to remind him that he is not entirely alone, though Arthur initially rejects his presence. The song then goes on to highlight the loneliness of the other knights as well, emphasizing the absurdity of their situation.

The lyrics of the song can be seen as a satirical take on the traditional hero's journey. Instead of the hero being surrounded by allies and helpers on their quest, Arthur is left to fend for himself and face the challenges alone. The use of humor in the song helps to highlight the absurdity of the situation and adds to the overall comedic tone of the musical.

The use of repetition in the song's chorus also emphasizes the feeling of loneliness and isolation. Each character sings the same line, "I'm all alone," emphasizing how despite their shared mission, they are still alone in their individual experiences.

I saw a high school production where during the second to last chorus, the conductor, some musicians in the pit, the and even the entire stage crew came out with snacks and popcorn to watch Arthur mope about how alone he was. Killed me.

Michael McGrath is brilliant in this song. I love the end when King Arthur places his hand on Patsy at the end. Very touching.

Some days you just feel alone and want to drown in it. This generally happens while surrounded by people. But we don't want to hear about that; we all want a chorus of others verifying "YOU'RE ALL ALONE!"

@HeyRae
