Spock's Beard play a brand of progressive rock with pop music leanings, drawing much influence from Genesis and the Beatles. They are also well known for their intricate multi-part vocal harmonies and use of counterpoint much in the vein of Gentle Giant. They've released records like the acclaimed The Kindness of Strangers and V before releasing the epic concept album Snow, which also marked the departure of leader and main composer Neal Morse for a solo career as a Christian artist.
After the departure of Neal Morse, the frontman role was taken on by Nick D'Virgilio. The 'new' lineup has released four more studio albums: Feel Euphoria, Octane, Spock's Beard and X.
On tour, the band is supported by drummer Jimmy Keegan, leading to occasional drum duets/duels between him and Nick D'Virgilio (which can be compared to Phil Collins and Chester Thompson at Genesis concerts; drummer Collins also took the lead singer role, after original frontman Peter Gabriel left the band).
On November 21, 2011 news was announced that Nick D'Virgilio would discontinue working with the band (due to his work commitments with "Cirque du soleil"), with Ted Leonard (former Enchant and Thought Chamber) replacing him on vocals and former tour drummer Jimmy Keegan replacing him on drums permanently.
The band was named for the Star Trek episode "Mirror, Mirror," where the crew enters a parallel universe in which the parallel Mr. Spock is differentiated by his beard.

To the sound of the fan
The wind flows over me
And I dream you're not very far
Cause you're my shining star
Shine your light on me
I call you out and somehow let you in
And I dream you're not very far
Cause you're my shining star
Shine your light on me
The body's getting old but seems to find the way
For just enough to blow it all
When I'm running blind and I can't see anymore
You're there to open the door
When all feels lost I turn and there you are
Now I know you're never very far
Cause you're my shining star
Shine your light on me
Tomorrow never knows about what is today
But that's OK, yes that's OK
Cause when I'm running blind and I can't see
Your light shines down, right down on me
Some people call it luck some people call it fate
But all I know is I'm here today
Bathing in the light that lights my way
The lyrics to Spock's Beard's song Shining Star are very introspective in nature, and speak of finding solace in the presence of someone who acts as a guiding light. The first verse describes the singer falling asleep, closing the shutters tight and listening to the sound of the fan. They dream of this shining star, someone who is not physically present but whose influence is strongly felt. The singer wants this person to shine their light on him, to guide and comfort him.
The second verse speaks of the singer feeling the blood rush to their skin and somehow letting this person in. The person continues to act as a shining star, providing comfort and guidance when the singer feels lost or unsure. The final verse talks about the uncertainty of the future, but how the presence of this shining star provides a source of strength and reassurance. The light that they shine provides a guiding path that the singer can follow, even on the bleakest days.
Overall, the song is a beautiful and reassuring reminder that we all have people in our lives who act as our "shining stars", guiding us through difficult times and lighting our way towards a better future.
