Silence Is Golden
Square Set Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Silence, silence is golden
Stop all your crying
All is not lost

Well we quarreled
Quarreled like old hens
We're both to blame
For what went wrong

All I want to do is take you in my arms and
Hold you
Hold you and keep you
Forever more girl
Forever more
I love you

Well I love you
Love you and need you
Forever more girl
Forever more

Well we quarreled
Quarreled like old hens
We're both to blame
For what went wrong

All I want to do is take you in my arms and
Hold you
Hold you and keep you
Forever more girl

Overall Meaning

In "Silence is Golden" by Square Set, the lyrics convey a message about the power and importance of silence, as well as the desire to mend a broken relationship. The song starts by emphasizing the value of silence, stating that it is precious and can bring peace. The line "Stop all your crying" suggests that the singer wants the other person to stop dwelling on past grievances and move forward.

The lyrics then acknowledge a previous argument between the two individuals, describing it as being akin to quarreling old hens. This implies that the disagreement was trivial or unnecessary. The line "We're both to blame for what went wrong" illustrates a sense of accountability and recognition that both parties have had a role in the deterioration of the relationship.

The chorus expresses the yearning to reconcile and repair the connection. The lyrics convey a deep desire to embrace the other person and hold them tightly, symbolizing a desire for intimacy and closeness. The repetition of the phrase "Forever more" emphasizes the singer's commitment to everlasting love and dedication.

The repetition of the lines "Well we quarreled, quarreled like old hens // We're both to blame for what went wrong" in the final paragraph reinforces the idea that both individuals are responsible for the difficulties they faced. It also serves as a reminder of the earlier acknowledgment of accountability. The chorus repeats once more, highlighting the longing to hold and cherish the other person indefinitely.

Overall, "Silence is Golden" explores the themes of the importance of silence in resolving conflicts, the shared responsibility for relationship problems, and the enduring desire for love and unity.

The Above breakdown of band members, as well as dates, are completely wrong. To set the record straight. Nol, Neville, Keith and I are the founder members of The Square set. This happened in March 1966. That same year in August of 1966 we went into AVS studios to record Silence is golden and most of the tracks on our Album. Ian Martin was the recording sound engineer. He was never a member of the band. Mike Noble was in a band with Neville called 'The Hi Five' way before 1966. He was never a member of The Square Set. The first album members were as above. Keith was replaced by Don Robertson on drums in 1967. After three months Malcolm Postlethwaite replaced Don. Don recorded Carol Carina with us in 1967, Malcolm recorded the follow-up Album 'Loving you is Sweeter than ever' in early 1968. The balance of members remained the same throughout these years. We split in August 1968. Because of 'That's What I Want' amazing rise to stardom four years later. Nol and Neville decided to reform the band in late 1971. I didn't want to rejoin so they employed Johnny Boshoff and Tony Moore to complete the third album 'Those Many Feelings'. Mike Faure sax joined the band on stage for about 3 months in 1968. Mercia Love was in the band from July 1967 to February 1968. you can read more from my book very soon. That's it the record is simple and straight.
