We Three Kings of Orient Are
St. Finian's Caroling Choir Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We three kings of Orient are,
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star:
O star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright, Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light
Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain, Gold I bring to crown Him again,
King for ever, ceasing never
Over us all to reign.
Frankincense to offer have I,
Incense owns a deity nigh;
Prayer and praising, all men raising, Worship him, God most high:
Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gathering gloom; Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in the stone-cold tomb
Glorious now behold Him arise,
King and God and Sacrifice.

Heaven sings:, ‘Alleluia’;
‘Alleluia,’ the earth replies.

Overall Meaning

The song "We Three Kings Of Orient Are" is a popular Christmas carol that depicts the journey of the Three Wise Men or Magi (Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar) from the East to Bethlehem to present gifts to the newborn Jesus. The first verse begins with "We three kings of Orient are," which refers to the three men who were considered to be kings or wise men in their own lands. As they journeyed through different terrains, they followed a bright star in the sky that they believed would lead them to the Messiah. They trekked through fields, mountains, and fountains, all the while keeping their eyes on the star which they believed was a sign from God.

The chorus of the song highlights the magnificence of the bright star that guided them on their journey. They sing of the star's wonder, beauty, and the guidance it provided for them to reach their destination. The second verse describes the gifts that they carried with them to present to the newborn Savior. Melchior brings gold, which was a symbol of kingship and royalty, as Jesus was considered to be the King of the Jews. Caspar brings frankincense, which was a symbol of worship and deity, as Jesus was considered to be the Son of God. Balthazar brings myrrh, which was a spice used for embalming and symbolized death and sacrifice, foreshadowing Jesus's crucifixion and burial. The final verse speaks of the glorious moment the Wise Men arrive in Bethlehem, as they witness the newborn King of Kings in all His divine glory, and Heaven and Earth sing out in unison, "Alleluia" in praise of God.
