River
St. Francis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I listen to your words you bring silence to my song
The notes flow like a river broken glass the love is gone
There are traces of a struggle but that too will disappear
There's no music that replaces a love that once was dear
Smashed and torn pulled apart a lover's riff can be so cold and dark
The night will lift to a morning sky still I morn for love with all the reasons mine
This river flows with no trace of you my words are gone still the notes play through
A trial to a courtroom a trial of the heart
A verdict the results from a wounded broken heart
I listen to your words you bring silence to my song
The notes flow like a river broken glass the love is gone
There are traces of a struggle but that too will disappear
There's no music that replaces a love that once was dear
I'm in a river of emotion I'm in a river to the sea I 'm in a river sinking lower from the bridge of burden
Where you pushed me
Smashed and torn pulled apart a lover's riff can be so cold and dark
The night will lift to a morning sky still I morn for love with all the reasons mine
This river flows with no trace of you my words are gone still the notes play through
I listen to your words you bring silence to my song
The notes flow like a river broken glass the love is gone
There are traces of a struggle but that too will disappear
there's no music that replaces a love that once was dear
You cannot retrieve me I've been lost into the night
The rivers new companion I've been swallowed out of site

I listen to your words you bring silence to my song
The notes flow like a river broken glass the love is gone

I remember kayaking this at flood stage back in 1978, 79, and 80 while in college at Washington University in St. Louis. It's not quite like running Upper Death on the Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon near where I grew up, but it was fun, and it was moving water. I also liked to hike in the Lower Rock Creek wilderness, which for all rights should be a RARE II protected wilderness. It's a beautiful place, and I miss it. I wish it could be protected in perpetuity for future generations to enjoy. Sadly, it doesn't seem like that will ever happen.

When we were kids (5 of us, including a girl; ages10-12), we were jumping off of a cliff in to this river (upstream near Farmington) in similar flash flood conditions. We basically were using it like a ride at a water park, lol. Looked just like this. We ran and jumped out as far as we could, and then grabbed the tops of trees and hand-walk back to shore. Just us. No floaties or life jackets. And then we'd run back up stream and do it again. It was just us, no adults. Nobody knew. IF THEY ONLY KNEW!!!
