Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
St. John's Cathedral Boys and Girls Choir Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hark the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth

Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King

Overall Meaning

The song "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" begins by calling for attention as the angels announce the arrival of the newborn King. The angels bring with them a message of peace and mercy. The joy felt by all nations is expressed as they join in the triumph of the skies and proclaim the significance of Christ's birth in Bethlehem. The repetition of "Glory to the newborn King!" serves as a reminder of the reverence and adoration for Christ, the newborn King.

The second verse of the song emphasizes the exaltation of Christ, heralded by the heavenly hosts. The birth of Christ, the Lord, is not only a significant event, but also a testament to the concept of the Godhead, with Christ embodying the Incarnation. Through Christ's willingness to live as a man, there is a reconciling bond formed between God and humanity. His birth serves to fulfill the promise of salvation, as declared by the prophets of old.

The final verse of the song recognizes Christ's role not only as Prince of Peace, but also as Son of Righteousness. Through his life and teachings, Christ brings light and healing to mankind. He willingly leaves His glory behind to be born as a man so that humankind may have eternal life. In this sense, Christ is born twice, the first time as a baby in Bethlehem and the second time in the hearts and souls of everyone who believes in Him.

God bless you all. I’ve been a believer in Christ my whole life. I prayed almost every night, but haven’t been to church seriously in many years. Tonight I stumbled upon this song on tv. It’s helped me renew my relationship with Christ. Whoever you are, wherever you are please know that you are loved. Peace and all the best for 2022.
