Your Country's Been Sold
Stan Coster Lyrics

You say you belong to Australia, my friend,
And like me you'd die for this land to defend
But let us be honest, it's sad but is true
Australia my friend doesn't belong to you

Our country's been sold by the powers that be
To big, wealthy nations way over the sea
We couldn't be taken with bayonets and lead
And so they decided to buy us instead

And talking of wars and the blood that was spilled
The widows, the crippled, the ones that were killed
And I often wonder if their ghosts can see
What's happening now to their native country

I wonder if ghosts of the fallen can see
The crime and corruption and vast poverty
With a lost generation of youth on the dole
Adrift on life's ocean without any goal

I once had a dream of our country so grand
Where rivers outback irrigated the land
With dams and canals in that wasteland out there
And big inland cities with work everywhere

The profit from factory, and farming, and mine
Was used to develop a nation so fine
Then I woke from my dreaming to reality
That the wealth of our nation goes over the sea

You say you belong to Australia, my friend,
And like me you'd die for this land to defend
But let us be honest, it's sad but is true
Australia my friend doesn't belong to you

Australia my friend doesn't belong to you

Overall Meaning

In the song "Your Country's Been Sold," Stan Coster reflects on the idea that Australia, a country that he and others love and are willing to die to defend, doesn't belong to them anymore. Coster blames the powers that be for selling out the country to big, wealthy nations "way over the sea." He laments about the lost generation of youth on the dole, adrift on life's ocean without any goal. He contrasts this sad reality with the dream he once had of a grand country where there are big inland cities with work everywhere, and the profit from factory, farming, and mining is used to develop a nation so fine. However, he wakes up to the reality that the wealth of their nation goes over the sea.

Coster mentions wars and the blood that was spilled to defend their country and wonders if the ghosts of the fallen can see the crimes and corruption happening now, with vast poverty engulfing the country. The song's title sums up Coster's message, that their country has indeed been sold, not by force but by greedy people who don't care about the country's future.

I met Stan when he was living in Tamworth many years ago. He wanted me to listen to a song he was trying to write but was "stuck" on where to proceed next. He played the part of the song he had devised and asked for my comment. I told him, "They couldn't take us with bayonet or gun and so they decided to buy us instead". "Hold that thought", Stan said. "What thought I said?"  He was a lovely man. If he spotted me at a concert or a rodeo he would come sit next and speak with me. They say he was like that. He never forgot a friend or someone who done him a favour. Luv U Stan !
