It's Been Awhile
State Of Mine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And it's been awhile since I could hold my head up high
And it's been awhile since I first saw you
And it's been awhile since I could stand on my own two feet again
And it's been awhile since I could call you

And everything I can't remember
As fucked up as it all may seem
The consequences that are rendered
I've stretched myself beyond my means

And it's been awhile since I could say that I wasn't addicted and
It's been awhile since I could say I love myself as well and
It's been awhile since I've gone and fucked things up, just like I always do
And it's been awhile but all that shit seems to disappear when I'm with you

And everything I can't remember
As fucked up as it all may seem
The consequences that I've rendered
Have gone and fucked things up again, yeah

Why must I feel this way?
Just make this go away
Just one more peaceful day

And it's been awhile since I could look at myself straight
And it's been awhile since I said "I'm sorry"
And it's been awhile since I've seen the way the candles light your face
And it's been awhile but I can still remember just the way you taste

And everything I can't remember
As fucked up as it all may seem to be, I know it's me
I cannot blame this on my father
He did the best he could for me

And it's been awhile since I could hold my head up high
And it's been awhile since I said "I'm sorry"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of State of Mine's song, "It's Been Awhile," depict the singer's process of self-reflection and self-improvement. The repetition of the phrase "it's been awhile" emphasizes how long it has been since the singer has been able to tackle the challenges they face. The lyrics mention being unable to hold one's head up high, be on their own feet or love themselves. However, the lyrics suggest that all these changes appear to disappear when they are with someone who makes them feel better. The singer reminisces about the past 'and everything I can't remember As fucked up as it all may seem The consequences that are rendered.'

The lyrics suggest that the singer has gone through a series of hardships and has recognized that it has brought consequences that he has to face. The lines 'And everything I can't remember/ As fucked up as it all may seem' show how much the past has impacted the singer. The singer is struggling to cope with the problems and move on from them. However, in acknowledging these transgressions, it may bring more clarity and understanding about how to deal with them. The lyrics show that the singer has accepted responsibility for what has happened but is still searching for a way to heal from it.

This cover is FUCKING amazing, and hits me on a personal level.

Around five years ago, my best friend of six years and I would duet this song on karaoke night. We actually practiced this jam and won a karaoke tournament, each walking away with $500 and an awesome memory.

Things started to slip after he got engaged. I had helped plan his bachelor party, but was told the wedding and the party had to be moved to a future date, that I would know when and where. Never got an invite until a week in advance, where I couldn't attend due to obvious work constraints. Found out later he had a bachelor's party in Vegas and that a lot of our mutual friends knew two months in advance. I foolishly gave the benefit of the doubt, and later asked him to be my best man at my wedding, despite my wife telling me he clearly doesn't care for our friendship.

My "friend" agreed, participated in the planning (where we were actually going to do our karaoke rendition of this song), only to never show up on that day. My calls to him went to VM and were never answered. A good friend of mine filled the role on short notice.

Since that day, I haven't spoken to my former friend (or rather the other way around), nor have I listened (or sang) to this song. It's been a while since I've thought about that guy, but this rendition definitely brings back some bittersweet memories, and the instrumentation choice (specifically the piano bit) definitely strikes that feeling. Well done guys.

I might have to do a solo tour to my local karaoke bar soon after this...

I feel old listening to this man. I was 10 when I first heard this and now I'm 29. Glad someone did a cover to keep the new generation aware of good music from the early 2000's.

Took a chance with this one... Wasn't sure about a cover of such an iconic song from a band I'd never heard. This is surprisingly refreshing. It's not overdone, it stays true to it's original, and yet it still finds way to be unique. I love this. Definitely subscribing. Going to be checking out some of your other tunes after this. Big props guys! You're doing it right!

@STATEOFMINE
