holding back the years
State of the Heart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Holding Back The Years
Thinking of The Fear I've had so long
When Somebody Hears
Listen to The Fear that's gone
Strangled by the wishes of pater
Hoping for the arms of mater
Get to Me the sooner or later.
Holding Back The Years
Chance for Me To Escape
From all I've known
Holding Back The Tears
Cause nothing here has grown
I've wasted all My Tears
Wasted all those Years
And nothing had the chance to be good
Nothing ever could Yeah.

I'll Keep Holding On
I'll Keep Holding On
I'll Keep Holding On
I'll Keep Holding On
So Tight.

(MUSIC)

I've wasted all My Tears
Wasted all those Years
And nothing had the chance to be good
Nothing ever could Yeah.

I'll Keep Holding On
I'll Keep Holding On
I'll Keep Holding On
I'll Keep Holding On
Holding, Holding, Holding.

That's All I Have Today
It's All I Have To Say.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of State of the Heart's song Holding Back The Years are about someone who has been holding back their emotions and fears for a long time. It seems like they have been struggling with some kind of trauma or pain from their past that has prevented them from growing and moving on. The first verse talks about the fear they have been feeling and how they want someone to hear and understand them. The following two lines are about the person's parents, the wishes of the father and the need for the mother's comfort. The singer seems to be longing for some kind of emotional support and understanding.

The chorus of the song indicates that the singer wants to escape from their past and all that they have known. It talks about the wasted tears and wasted years they have spent holding back. Despite wanting to escape, the singer is still holding on tight to their past, perhaps out of habit or fear. The last verse of the song is a repetition of the chorus, with the "holding on" phrase being repeated as if to emphasize the importance of not giving up. The last two lines "That's all I have today, It's all I have to say" suggest that the singer has run out of things to say and is perhaps overcome with emotion.
