The lyrics of State of the Heart's song Holding Back The Years are about someone who has been holding back their emotions and fears for a long time. It seems like they have been struggling with some kind of trauma or pain from their past that has prevented them from growing and moving on. The first verse talks about the fear they have been feeling and how they want someone to hear and understand them. The following two lines are about the person's parents, the wishes of the father and the need for the mother's comfort.
