Frontman John Kay's mother escaped with him at age 4 from Soviet occupied East Germany, an event recounted in the song "Renegade" on the album Steppenwolf Seven. His family resettled in Hannover, West Germany, before moving to Canada in 1958. Kay is partially blind, hence the use of dark glasses
In 1968, Nick St. Nicholas replaced Moreve as bass player.
Steppenwolf had its origins in the Toronto blues band Sparrow, which was formed in 1964 and played coffeehouses in Yorkville. By 1967 they had settled in San Francisco.
Steppenwolf rocketed to fame after their third single, "Born to Be Wild" was used in the movie Easy Rider, as well as "The Pusher". The former song may have coined the term "heavy metal". This was followed by several more hits, including "Magic Carpet Ride" from Steppenwolf the Second, and "Rock Me" from At Your Birthday Party. Many fans consider their double album Steppenwolf Live [an extended single album in the UK] the best of Steppenwolf's releases. Monster and For Ladies Only were the band's most political albums, and are still fondly remembered by fans as two of the best rock & roll snapshots of the attitudes of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The band broke up in 1971, and Kay pursued a solo career. Steppenwolf reformed in 1974 with the album Slow Flux, and disbanded in 1976. Afterwards, several versions of the band toured North America until Kay reformed the official version of the group in 1980.
John Kay released a solo album in 2001.
I'm Asking
Steppenwolf Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Do your children take jive?
And god was just piled upon them
Do you think they'll survive?
You send them to the movies
What you think that they'll see?
You know that that won't be love
That not breathing cheaply
A rapist or a cheat
I missed your millions
And violence in our streets
I'm asking!
Yes, I'm asking!
but Las Vegas bodies
Are still not for your lives
I'm asking all you mothers,
Do you tell your children lies?
How do you think they'll grow up
If they're weened upon a gun
Or stories of how the stork
And bout you, your new start
A tear in the darkness
As a wellness fills there eyes
When truth is discovered
If they leave you - don't
Don't you be surprised
I'm asking
I'm asking all you mothers
I'm asking
All you mothers to be
I'm asking
For the sake of our children,
Don't take away the right
The right to be free
I'm asking all you young girls
Have you learned about lost pleasure
Or did your parents bind tomorrow
Restrain you from the treasure
Tell me, look behind you
Was your mama really there?
Your child looks a lot like you
For her sake I hope you'll be fair
You want your kids to grow up
With the things you never had
Then give them all there freedom
Respect there values of good and bad
I'm asking
Yes, I'm asking
I'm asking
I'm asking
Do you tell your children lies
I'm asking
I'm asking
I'm asking
I'm asking
Yes, I'm asking
I'm asking
The song "I'm Asking" by Steppenwolf is a powerful commentary on the state of society and the responsibilities of mothers and parents in raising their children. The lyrics ask a series of challenging questions aimed at mothers, young girls, and society as a whole. The opening lines directly address mothers, questioning whether their children are being influenced by negative and potentially destructive elements such as jive music, violence, and movies that do not promote love. The song goes on to ask whether mothers are telling their children lies, and whether they are setting a good example for them by respecting freedom and values of good and bad.
The song also speaks directly to young girls, asking them whether they have been denied the pleasures of life or restrained from pursuing their dreams. The lyrics suggest that parents have a responsibility to support and respect their children's choices, and to allow them to grow up free from harmful influences. The song suggests that the future of our society and our children rests on the choices we make today, and asks listeners to consider the implications of their actions.
