Vocalist Rob Birch and DJ)/producer Nick Hallam founded their Gee Street recording studio and record label with money they were given to leave their London flat and, dispensing with using a backing band, travelled to early gigs on public transport.
They recorded their debut album, 33-45-78 in 1989 on a shoestring budget, with DJ Cesare, drummer Owen If and backing vocalist Cath Coffey. In 1990, "Elevate My Mind" became first British hip hop single to reach the United States R&B record chart. However, in the emerging UK alternative dance scene, it took an alliance with the Jungle Brothers to ensure chart success for Supernatural. Remix work for U2, PM Dawn, Queen Latifah, The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Monie Love and Electronic followed.
Their live band included singers Andrea Bedassie and Verona Davis, and they were one of the few hip hop acts to play at rock music festivals at the time. Stereo MCs' mainstream breakthrough came in 1992 with the album Connected, which contained the hit singles "Connected", "Step It Up", "Creation", and "Ground Level", and also won them the BRIT Awards for Best Group and Best Album.
The follow-up to Connected did not appear for almost a decade. Further remix duties for Madonna and the Jungle Brothers in 1998 kept the Stereo MCs' name in the limelight. Madonna went on to use the Stereo MCs remix of "Frozen" as the basis of the live arrangement of the song on her 2001 Drowned World Tour.
2001 saw the release of Deep Down & Dirty, followed by a tour including slots opening for the recently re-united Jane's Addiction. Their sixth studio album, Double Bubble, was released in July 2008, followed by their seventh album, Emperor's Nightingale, in August 2011.

So stretchin', been their leader
Wake up, seen their repeating
Looking like rain when their shame were needed
For all of my cons
Preaching comforts for holding on
Got a weakness
Try not to feel it
Now I can read it
I guess our time will spare
(...) come and goes for a broken (β¦ain)
Broke the line in the toxic seat
'Till they just couldn't take anymore than me
'Cos baby, I've changed
You're walking on black gold of the sun
You're acting strange (whoo-hoo)
I am just checking number one
Looking at the number one, one, number one
Yea-heah
Couldn't change your past while it's needed
Energise, never be defeated
I (...) say yes, when I see you figure
Load of thoughts as I'm pulling this trigger
Couldn't help to pass (...) getting it on
Couple (...) On and on
One's written, but another be (aβ¦)
Sell a dollar for the man not try toβ¦
I'm ready to reign
'Cos I ain't afraid of anyone
Stay out of my range
'Cos you don't know what I have become
If I'm acting strange
Well maybe, I'm checking number one
See baby, I've changed
I'm walking on black gold of the sun
Yeah-eah-eah
Ha-ha-ha
Black gold of the sun
Yeah-eah-eah
Whoo-hoo
When I make the gray
Rise and (fβ¦)
She's gonna want my money
Getting' paid
Walking in shades
And in shadows of a pray
Cry when I laugh
Like to get laid
Come out my shell
Disintegrate
Never look back to the
Promises made
Boil to the point
Of a burning pain
Fuck what you want
(β¦) (gay gay gay gayβ¦)
If you can't take a peek
I think you know the rest
This is life
Not a test
We're coming again
'Cos there's a key break going on
You thought that I'd fade away
Well I got news for everyone
We're ready to rage
'Cos we ain't hurtin' anyone
See baby, we're changed
We're walking on black gold of the sun
Yeah-eah-eah
Ha-ha-ha
Black gold of the sun
Yeah-eah-eah
Whoo-hoo
(Black gold of the sun) (2X)
The lyrics to Stereo MC's song Black Gold are quite cryptic and open to interpretation. The song appears to be about standing up for oneself and realizing one's worth after being mistreated or taken for granted. The imagery of "black gold" could refer to something rare and valuable, but also something that is hidden or difficult to reach. The lyrics suggest a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, as the singer learns to value their own needs and desires over other people's expectations.
The opening verses describe a man who has been mistreated or exploited by others, and who has tried to "preach comforts for holding on" to his own sense of dignity and self-worth. However, he also has a "weakness" that he has tried to hide or deny, but now realizes he needs to confront. He feels as though he has broken a "line" or a boundary and has reached a breaking point where he can no longer tolerate being mistreated.
As the song progresses, the singer seems to embrace a new sense of confidence and self-assuredness, declaring that they are "ready to reign" and "walking on black gold of the sun." They acknowledge that they may be seen as acting "strange" by others who are used to their previous behavior, but they are simply "checking number one" and valuing their own needs and desires above others. The final verses suggest that the singer has some kind of plan or ambition, perhaps related to making money or achieving success, but they are also willing to be free and flexible in their approach, "disintegrating" old patterns and being open to new experiences.
Overall, the lyrics of Black Gold suggest a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, as the singer learns to assert their own needs and desires over other people's expectations, and embraces a newfound sense of confidence and independence.

Massively underrated as a group by mainstream press and radio........but massively appreciated by those who know their tunes, played the tiny Glade tent at Glasto 2016.......the crowd stretched back way beyond the confines of that tent, and it was so good to see people literally running and stumbling through the mud towards the sounds as their ears realised who was playing........classic.
