Earle was born in Fort Monroe, Virginia, and grew up near San Antonio, Texas. His father, Jack Earle, was an air traffic controller. Although he was born in Virginia where his father was stationed, the family returned to Texas before Earle's second birthday. They moved several times but Earle grew up primarily in the San Antonio area.
Earle began learning the guitar at the age of 11 and placed in a talent contest at his school at age 13. He is reported to have run away from home at age 14 to follow his idol, singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt around Texas. Earle was "rebellious" as a youngster and dropped out of school at the age of 16. He moved to Houston with his 19-year-old uncle, who was also a musician, where he married and worked odd jobs. While in Houston Earle finally met Van Zandt, who became his hero and role model.
In 1975, at the age of 20, Earle moved to Nashville and began working as a songwriter. In these early days, he recorded with Guy Clark and Emmylou Harris. He finally scored a country hit in 1981, writing Johnny Lee's top ten cut "When You Fall in Love." Earle's early work as a performer tended towards the rockabilly sound, popular at the time. In 1986, his first proper album Guitar Town was a critical and commercial success. It sold over 300,000 copies and led some to herald him as a saviour of country music.
Earle long struggled with drug abuse. His addiction eventually caused a departure from performing and recording after he was dropped by MCA in 1991. Whilst in jail on drug and firearm charges, he kicked the habit and returned to music after his release in 1994.
Earle's "second, post-jail, musical career" has been more stylistically diverse than his early material, dipping in acoustic, bluegrass, and roots rock sounds. I Feel Alright and Transcendental Blues met with good reviews and decent sales. 2002's somewhat controversial Jerusalem was one of the first albums to directly address the September 11 attacks. It brought Earle's leftist views to media attention, especially the song "John Walker's Blues."
His latest album of original material I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive was released in 2011. Songfacts reports that one of the tracks, This City, got played on HBO’s New Orleans based show Treme several months before the album‘s release. Earle, who plays a recurring street musician, composed the song especially for the drama series.
Earle has also released a tribute album of material written by friend and mentor Townes Van Zandt, entitled Townes.

Steve Earle Lyrics

She'll lead you down through misery
Leave you low, come time to go
Alone and low as low can be
If I had a nickel I'd find a game
If I won a dollar I'd make it rain
If it rained an ocean I'd drink it dry
Legs to walk and thoughts to fly
Eyes to laugh and lips to cry
A restless tongue to classify
All born to grow and grown to die
So tell my baby I said so long
Tell my mother I did no wrong
Tell my brother to watch his own
And tell my friends to mourn me none
I'm chained upon the face of time
Feelin' full of foolish rhyme
There ain't no dark till something shines
I'm bound to leave this dark behind
Ride the blue wind high and free
She'll lead you down through misery
Leave you low, come time to go
Alone and low as low can be
In Ft. Worth all the neon's burnin' bright
Pretty lights red and blue
But they'd shut down all the honky tonks tonight
And say a prayer or two
If they only knew
You used to say the highway was your home
But we both know that ain't true
It's just the only place a man can go
When he don't know where he's travelin' to
But Colorado's always clean and healin'
And Tennessee in Spring is green and cool
It never really was your kind of town
But you went around with the Ft. Worth Blues
Somewhere up beyond the great divide
Where the sky is wide and the clouds are few
A man can see his way clear to the light
Just hold on tight
That's all you gotta do
And they say Texas weather's always changin'
And one thing change'll bring is somethin' new
And Houston really ain't that bad a town
So you hang around with the Ft. Worth Blues
There's a full moon over Galway Bay tonight
Silver light over green and blue
And every place I travel through, I find
Some kinda sign that you've been through
But Amsterdam was always good for grieving
And London never fails to leave me blue
Paris never was my kinda town
So I walked around with the Ft. Worth Blues
"Rex's Blues / Ft. Worth Blues" is a poignant and introspective song by Steve Earle that delves into themes of loneliness, longing, and finding solace in different places. The lyrics reflect a sense of melancholy and a search for meaning in life's fleeting moments. The blue wind, mentioned in the opening lines, represents a sense of freedom and escape. However, it also leads the singer down a path of misery, leaving them feeling alone and low.
The lyrics touch upon the idea of gambling as a metaphor for life's uncertainties. The singer yearns for a chance at financial success, dreaming of winning money and raining it down. Yet, even if they were to achieve such wealth, it wouldn't satisfy their deeper emotional emptiness. This suggests a longing for something more meaningful and fulfilling.
As the song progresses, the singer contemplates the transient nature of life and the inevitability of death. They express the importance of human experiences, such as walking, laughing, crying, and classifying thoughts. These activities are seen as part of a natural cycle, where everything is born to grow and eventually die. There is a longing for acceptance and a desire for loved ones to remember them without mourning.
In the second part of the song, the focus shifts to Ft. Worth, Texas. The vibrant neon lights contrast with the closure of the honky-tonks, creating a somber atmosphere. The singer reminiscing about someone who used to claim the highway as their home, but it is revealed that it was simply a place to go when feeling lost. The references to Colorado and Tennessee evoke a sense of healing and tranquility, in contrast to the Ft. Worth Blues experienced by the singer.
The song ends with mentions of different places the singer has traveled, highlighting the impact of these locations on their emotional state. There is a wistful tone as they suggest that everywhere they go, they find signs of the person they've lost. The reference to Ft. Worth Blues not only represents a literal connection to the city but also symbolizes the emotional weight and memories associated with that time.
Overall, "Rex's Blues / Ft. Worth Blues" explores the universal themes of longing, vulnerability, and the search for meaning in life's transient moments. It paints a picture of a narrator trying to navigate their emotions and find solace in various places, ultimately reflecting on the bittersweet aspects of life and the persistence of memories.
