The Mountain
Stevie B. Wolf Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

I was asleep in a hammock
I was dreaming that I was a web
I was a dream-catcher hanging in the window of a minivan
Parked along the water's edge

I'd say that I was all alone
I'd say that I was all alone
I'd say that I was all alone

But I will never be born as a scorpion

And you're gonna be okay come morning
Find your legs and find your horns and
Everybody gotta be reborn
But I'll never be born as a scorpion
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
And everybody gotta, gotta be reborn
But you will never be born as a scorpion

And you're gonna be okay come morning
Find your legs and find your horns
'Cause you're not just another pair of boat shoes
Walking away from the harbor

Ya, da, da, da, ya, da, da, da
Ya, da, da, da, da, da, da
Ya, da, da, da, ya, da, da, da
Ya, da, da, da, da, da, da

Cloud shadow on the mountain
Cloud shadow on the plains
Cloud shadow making island nation on the fabric of this terrain

You gotta jump, jump over the island
Like a gazelle
You gotta jump over the the island
Like a new long legged gazelle

But you will never be born as a scorpion
You will never be born as a scorpion

Or just another pair of boat shoes
Walking away from the harbor
Just another pair of boat shoes
Walking away from the harbor

You're gonna be okay come morning
Find your legs and find your horns
And everybody gotta be reborn
But you will never be born as a scorpion

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
And everybody gotta, gotta be reborn
But you will never be born as a scorpion
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Stevie B. Wolf's song "The Mountain" paint a vivid and introspective picture of self-discovery and transformation. The opening verses describe a state of deep introspection and vulnerability, as the singer finds themselves in a dreamlike state while sleeping in a hammock. The imagery of being a dream-catcher hanging in a minivan along the water's edge suggests a sense of fleeting and fragile existence, perhaps hinting at a desire for stability and connection in an uncertain world.

The repetition of the phrase "I'd say that I was all alone" highlights a feeling of isolation and emotional distance from others, contrasting with the reassurance that they will never be born as a scorpion, symbolizing a sense of protection and resilience. The reassurance that "you're gonna be okay come morning" and the encouragement to "find your legs and find your horns" suggest a message of hope, personal growth, and empowerment. The idea of being reborn, shedding old identities, and embracing new possibilities is a recurring theme throughout the lyrics.

The mentioning of cloud shadows on the mountain and plains creates a metaphorical landscape of change and transformation. The image of a cloud shadow forming an island nation on the fabric of the terrain symbolizes the power of imagination and perspective in shaping one's reality. The metaphorical call to "jump over the island like a gazelle" conveys a sense of freedom, agility, and courage in overcoming obstacles and embracing new challenges.

The closing verses bring the narrative full circle, emphasizing the idea that everyone must undergo a process of rebirth and renewal. The repetition of the refrain "you will never be born as a scorpion" reinforces the notion of protection and inner strength, while the imagery of boat shoes walking away from the harbor suggests a journey towards new horizons and possibilities. Ultimately, "The Mountain" by Stevie B. Wolf invites listeners to reflect on their own paths of self-discovery, resilience, and transformation, reminding them that despite challenges and uncertainties, they have the power to embrace new beginnings and move forward with optimism and grace.

I watched 2 sets of The Wolf's show at Paul's Mall in Boston waiting to hear Smokestack Lightning but when I asked the band about it they said the Wold was done for the night. I went over and told the Wolf I'd been waiting since 1960 in Mississippi to see him sing that song live. He said, "Son, you waited long enough " and got back up on the stage and dedicated the song to me. He asked me to stay at his table and have a drink with him! What a great guy and a great musician!
