Landslide
Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac) Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Climbed a mountain then I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide brought me down
Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above
Can I handle the seasons of my life
Uh ah
Uh ah
Uh ah
Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
I'm getting older too
Well
Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
I'm getting older too
Well, I'm getting older too
So, take this love and take it down
Yeah, and if you climb a mountain and ya turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide brought me down
And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well maybe
Well maybe
Well maybe
The landslide will bring you down.
The lyrics to Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham's song Landslide are reflective and introspective, dealing with themes of self-doubt, fear of change, and the passage of time. The opening lines, "I took my love and I took it down, climbed a mountain then I turned around, and I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills, well, the landslide brought me down," depict the singer surveying the uncertainty and struggles of their life, brought down by the weight of their choices and fears. The line "Oh mirror in the sky, what is love, can the child within my heart rise above?" suggests a deeper questioning of the nature of love and whether or not the singer can overcome their own internal conflicts to find happiness.
The chorus, "Can I sail through the changing ocean tides, can I handle the seasons of my life?" portrays the singer's doubts about their own ability to navigate the ups and downs of life. The following verses, "Well, I've been afraid of changin', 'cause I built my life around you, but time makes you bolder, children get older, and I'm getting older too," express feelings of fear and uncertainty as the singer confronts the reality of aging and changing relationships. The final stanza, "So take this love and take it down, yeah, and if you climb a mountain and you turn around, and if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills, well, the landslide brought me down, and if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills, well maybe, well maybe, well maybe, the landslide will bring you down," highlights the cyclical nature of life and love, and the inevitability of facing difficult challenges and setbacks.

I used to sing this at the top of my lungs to my husband Damon. 15 years of marriage and 4 kids later he was killed on his way to work one day 4 days after Christmas. Now I sing it to my children and miss the man we built our life around. Learning to continue on without you is the hardest. Damon, the children are getting older....RIP forever 37
