The band was bascially Nancy Wilson and Peter Frampton:

Stillwater is a composite of bands and musicians who Cameron Crowe met whilst working at Rolling Stone. It is said to be likely that guitarist Russell Hammond is based on Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers, who Crowe went on tour with in 1973.

Stillwater's songs were written by Peter Frampton, and Crowe and his wife Nancy Wilson, guitarist in the rock band Heart. Wilson also did the original music for the film -- the acoustic pieces you hear.

And while there is no connection between the two, there was also a real band called Stillwater, active from 1972-83, who were known for their hit "Mindbender." The "real" Stillwater were signed to the recording label Capricorn Records. Capricorn became famous for its role in spearheading Southern rock in the seventies, with The Allman Brothers Band at the forefront, but also including the Marshall Tucker Band, Elvin Bishop and Wet Willie, among the more successful bands. Cameron Crowe was able to get permission to use the name 'Stillwater' after screening the film for the band. Stillwater's regional success began as the momentum of Southern Rock waned. Capricorn went out of business in 1982, leading to their demise. They continue to play annual "reunion concerts" and released "Running Free" in 1997.

According to IMDb the role of Russell Hammond was based on Glen Frey from the Eagles. But I don't actually know this. For all I know, you could be right, I have no idea how accurate the info is on IMDb... but what you're saying actually sounds more logical to me, because the Allman Brothers were the first band he went on tour with, AND if you notice in the film, on the bus it reads Almost Famous tour '73. And apparently the film is supposed to be a semi-autobiographical account of his days as a young reporter for Rolling Stone magazine, and in the film, the kid is going on tour for the first time, so it makes a lot more sense that he would be referring to the Allman Brohers, so yeah, I think you nailed it.

Yeah I just watched this film yesterday, for the first time???? The soundtrack to this movie is more than awesome. And to learn that Jason Lee actually did some of the vocals, wow.

+Susan Byerly I am not too sure about this. I listened to some of the audio commentary from the extended version of the DVD and Cameron Crowe mentions the guy who provided the vocals for Jeff Bebe. He also mentioned his then wife, Nancy Wilson from Heart, actually provides the rough vocals some of Stillwater's songs that Jason Lee is lip synching in the movie.

Uh,... not sure where you got that info from, but not true. Jason Lee is lip syncing in this movie. In fact, None of the actors in this movie are playing the music. What you are hearing is a group of session musicians recorded in a studio, and overdubbed. However, the guys playing the role of the band Stillwater, did have to learn these songs. Crowe wanted it to look as authentic as possible, so he had the guys practice for 4 hours a day, 5 days a week for 6 weeks, so they could play along with the audio track and actually appear as though they are really playing. All of the actors playing the band are really musicians. Billy Crudup is actually a really good guitar player and singer. He plays guitar and sings in a movie called "Rudderless" (a must see movie for any musician, or music lover)

I feel like it would have been easier for Jason to at least get some sort of vocal lessons because this kind of music doesn't need a perfect voice. Seems a little unfair for Billy and the other guys to learn an instrument. Although I guess having Peter Frampton as your teacher may make things simpler.

It's funny that you say that because Jason Lee actually watched hours of Bad Company and Free concerts so that he could carry the look of Paul Rogers for the film. I know that Jason Lee wasn't actually singing this song, but I thought it was interesting that he picked P.R. to emulate for this movie. And I think it sounds a little like Bad Company too.

Yes, Stillwater is a real band. Yes, the fictional band in the movie is based more on the Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, and The Eagles than on the real Stillwater. But no these are not songs written by the real Stillwater, they were written by Peter Frampton (who taught the actors how to play, and had a small part in the film) and Nancy Wilson of Heart (who at the time was Cameron Crowe's wife)
