Strawbs - Round And Round

I drew the blade across my wrist
To see how it would feel
Looked into the future
There was nothing to reveal
For we were just the product
Of the ever spinning wheel
Round and round we go
Round and and round we go.

Come and see me
When the screw has turned another turn
It's not that I'm confused
But I've an awful lot to learn
But I will be the one
To make you work for what you earn
Round and round we go
Round and and round we go.

After all it's just the revolution I despise
The dawn of revelations and the flower power prize
And I pity those poor children with no sunshine in their eyes

Round and round we go
Round and and round we go.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Round and Round" by The Strawbs speak of the cyclical nature of life and the inevitability of certain events. The opening lines, "I drew the blade across my wrist / to see how it would feel" are startling and seem to suggest an act of suicidal ideation, but they can also be interpreted metaphorically as a desire to test the limits of one's own pain and emotions. The singer then contemplates the future and finds it bleak, seeing only a never-ending wheel of existence.

The second verse serves as a call to action, urging someone to come and visit once the "screw has turned another turn," implying that time has passed and events have occurred. The singer claims to have much to learn, but also to be a hard worker who earns what they receive. The cyclical nature of life is repeated in the chorus, which states that "round and round we go."

The final verse references the counterculture of the 1960s, expressing a disdain for the idea of revolution and the flower power movement, while also expressing empathy for those who suffer and see no hope. The melancholy tone of the lyrics suggests a sense of weariness and resignation, but also a desire to understand the world and one's place within it.

Overall, "Round and Round" offers a bleak but philosophical look at life, with a focus on the cyclical nature of existence and the importance of hard work.
