Im So Young
Students Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have a girlfriend
She says I'm her only one
We wanna get married
But we're so young
So young
Can't marry no one
They say our love is
Just a teenage affection
But no one knows
Our hearts' direction

So young
Can't marry no one
I'm I'm I'm so young
I'm I'm I'm so young
I'm I'm I'm so young
Can't marry no one, no one

Pretty soon now
I'll go to sea
Their mother's baby
Will have seen the last of me
So young
Can't marry no one, no one

Can't marry no one
Can't marry no one
Can't marry no one
Can't marry no one

Can't marry no one
Can't marry no one

Overall Meaning

The Students' song "I'm So Young" is a heart-wrenching ballad about young love and the challenges that come with it. The song tells the story of a teenage couple who are deeply in love and want to get married, but are hindered by their age. The first two lines of the song, "I have a girlfriend, she says I'm her only one," establishes the couple's love for one another. However, the next line, "We wanna get married, but we're so young," reveals a sense of frustration and sadness. The repeated line "So young, can't marry no one" emphasizes the couple's feeling of being trapped by their age.

The song then addresses the outside world's doubts about the legitimacy of their love. The lyrics "They say our love is just a teenage affection, but no one knows our hearts' direction" speaks to the common belief that teenage love is fleeting and superficial. However, the couple's sincerety is highlighted as they declare that they alone know the depth of their feelings.

The final stanza of "I'm So Young" revolves around the idea of separation. It suggests that the couple's love may not withstand the test of time or distance. The line "Pretty soon now I'll go to sea / Their mother's baby will have seen the last of me" is especially poignant, hinting that the young man might be leaving to fight in a war. The repeated line "Can't marry no one" adds to the sense of hopelessness and immaturity.

Overall, "I'm So Young" is a melancholic but relatable song that captures the fragility and intensity of young love.

Nope. Appreciation for true talent.
I've been listening to doo wop since my childhood, and I was born long after the doo wop era.
