1. Summoner, Formerly known as Riff Cannon, are a heavy rock band from Boston, USA. The quartet has released a debut album entitled "Phoenix" (2012). They play a heavy blend of Psych, Sludge, Stoner, Doom, Space Rock to outstanding effect. In 2013, the band released their second album, Atlantian.

2. Black metal band from Italy. Summoner started in January 2001, after the Death Seagull’s Scream dissolution, with Giorgio Beltrami, Stefano Magni and Massimo. Soon, they change the female vocalist for Paolo Cattaneo. The line-up was completed discovering bassist Luca Ciusaniat.
They released an EP in 2002 titled Summoner's Sign and a full length album in 2003 titled Winter Solstice.

I loved this game, the monsters, the fighting method, the quests, the maps were full of details, magics effects, bosses, summoning deamons, the skills and weapons everything in this game was just good. When I finished this game, I felt like playing it again.

So many fond memories I have of this game. It was my first genuine leap into the RPG genre and gaming itself. I still vividly remember the story and places in the game. It was such a wonderful experience. I felt similar when playing Divinity 2 recently. But on the whole, Summoner is my favourite of all time.

It's not that Summoner 2 is a bad game. It's not. It's actually pretty good. It's because I felt utterly BETRAYED by what the game did to Joseph and Rosaline.

Summoner 2 is a very good example to why Retcons can be very, very bad as far as I'm concerned.

Like you said a lot of aspects of this game haven't aged well, but I will forever love this game's soundtrack! It's atmospheric, it's unusual for a fantasy setting, and they simply don't make video game music like this anymore. The same composer also worked on the Freespace games, which are still arguably the benchmark for space sims.

I loved the lore and music of this game, I always found it hard and tedious to fight, but really like the scale of the world. Yet somehow I always felt sad because it felt like there was always something further to explore beyond invisible walls and you just couldn't get there. I think a big factor to why It was always memorable to me was because it was the first ps2 game I ever had and the graphics at the time were memorizing in that transition from old to new console.

I loved this game back then, & I still do. Summoner was my 1st PS2 game I got when the PS2 released in 2000. It was a release game here in the U.S. I re-played it again in 2018 (or '19) for the 1st time since release, and I thought it held up really well. Actually, it looks good on my Sony Wega HD CRTV. It brought back great memories of those times. In fact, I was thinking of playing this again, and its sequel (Gamecube version) within a few months. Truly, I wish this would get a remaster and/or another sequel.

Thanks for this video. I had very fond memories of the Summoner as well. Boy has this game aged badly. I played it on the Playstation 2 when it released, and I remember being very impressed with the graphics and story. I think back then it was a good game, it's just that so many great RPG's have come since then and reinvented how we play the genre, that it just doesn't hold up. Also the Summoner 2 was an excellent game for the time. The story line was good but not quite as dark, and I believe the combat, gameplay, and graphics were quite a bit better than the original. However, that is also nostalgia talking.

I'm replaying this on steam now, it's still fun to play. Me and my dad played it. It's a very long game from what I remember. There's a level where you are constantly poisoned and it gets very tough to sustain your progress if you didn't level healing enough.

My favorite memory of this game is this: I collected all the rings and I thought the game was over after only playing for a handful of hours. Then I find out that, no! It's just beginning and the map is way bigger than I ever imagined it would be. I'll never forget that. The guy betrays you and you end up in jail on an entire another continent and then you find out that there's other continent is like five times bigger than the place you are at previously. I also remember the characters being really freaking cool. I forgot how annoying the controls were though.

3:23 Yep, that's the main complaint I recall having years ago. Fortunately, the PC version has the teleport trick that makes traversing the world (and town) a lot quicker.
edit: In hindsight, the game just needed lore bits throughout the world. That'd make it feel more like exploration and less like pointless labor.

I got this game when I was 11 or so. And I only paid 5 bucks. At first I saw why its only 5, but then at a certain point I was hooked. Very fun and my imagination took me in deep to the world. Good times. Good video.

@@Labyrinth6000 I remember having to sneak into the castle with fleece for the first time. I found that very difficult and kept failing, until I eventually figured out the little trick needed. It's been like 18 years since I played.

I remember I figured out how to spam spells by opening the quick menu when you casted it. It would automatically set the spell to cast without finishing the animation. That's how I cheesed the end. Not proud of it. But I was 11

I played this game as a kid and I loved it, but like you, when I went back as an adult for nostalgia perpouses, i deff saw its flaws. I played this on the PS2 back then. I went on to play summoner 2 but that felt like a very different game.

I really liked the lore in this game, it was one of the earliest rpgs where I really go into the lore because it wasnt just another typical tolkien fantasy or spiky haired jrpg. The second game isnt as dark but it gets even an weirder mix of fantasy and sci fi. Would love to see a remake or a sequel done in a more competently made style like divinity or pillars of eternity

I got a launch PS2 because I wanted to play Final Fantasy X. I was starving for a good RPG. I rented Summoner.

My main memories are that (a) encounters were friggin' HARD, (b) load times were atrocious, and (c) the world felt so overwhelmingly huge compared to what I was used to in console jRPGs.

Now I'm playing it again off the hard drive of my hacked PS2. Load times are bearable. I'm more aware of cRPGs now and how to tackle the breadth of the worlds they envisage. I've figured out how to avoid letting encounters become a bloodbath.

I'm honestly more entertained by this game in 2019 than I have been by any RPG in a long time.

Thanks for this. The way you talk about the grind and tedium scares me off from buying this game, even though it's like a buck and a half on sale. The description on GOG enticed me, but I just don't have endless hours to grind just trying to get from one place to another right now.

I had a similar experience trying to replay Nightmare Creatures yesterday. I loved that game when I was younger and remembered it as being an awesome gothic action game, but now I can't get any enjoyment from it because the controls are so archaic.

I bet you the catacombs of Iona was one of the first levels they made when they were designing the game and that's why it was so linear and boring. They probably didn't really know what direction they wanted to go with and so they filled it with a bunch of skeletons.

I recently revisited Summoner because I got a PS2 emulator and just kinda felt like replaying what I remember to be the worst game from my old PS2 library. I really wanted to like this game this time around but I just can't. There are so many things wrong with it, especially when judging with modern game design sensibilities.

Yeah i have heard this argument several times, that most of summoner success was because there were no other action RPG at the time. Nevertheless i really enjoyed summoner and i cant help but agree with you, that we were somehow bewitched by the game to believe it was great, when in reality it was average at best. The characters had good presentations but bad dialog and almost 0 interactions. Flece was my favorite though. I think it still has some good things to consider it an important game in history, the combat at least in paper, was a really nice idea, chain combos, real time combat, spells and summoning. But they didnt implemented correctly and ended just being a hack and slash with silly mechanics. The summons were cool though. Off topic, Talking about combat in games, i dont think any game in history achieved the perfection of the combat in Vagrant Story, pseudo-turn combat with amazing chain combos.

I'd remembered this game from my childhood but couldn't remember the name. I kept expecting some youtuber to bring it up or someone on the internet. Nope. I had to go through a few lists of RPGs for the Ps2 and all I could remember was the cover and the vague storyline.
And much like I thought this is basically the only channel on youtube with a video review thing.
