Do You Hear What I Hear?
Susan Boyle feat. Amber Stassi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Said the night wind to the little lamb
Do you see what I see
Way up in the sky, little lamb
Do you see what I see
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite
With a tail as big as a kite
Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear
A song, a song, high above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea

(Do you hear what I hear)
Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king
Do you know what I know
In your palace warm, mighty king
Do you know what I know
A child, a child shivers in the cold
Let us bring him silver and gold
Let us bring him silver and gold

Let us bring him silver and gold

Do you know what I know

Do you see what I see
Do you hear what I hear

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Do You Hear What I Hear?" tell a story of a little lamb who is asked by the night wind if it sees what the wind does- a star, as big as a kite, dancing in the night sky. Later, the little lamb asks a shepherd boy if he hears what he does - a song, with a voice as big as the sea, ringing through the sky. The shepherd boy hears and passes the message along to the mighty king, asking him if he knows what he knows- that there is a child shivering in the cold, and he suggests bringing silver and gold to help.

The song has a religious and philanthropic message, which is in line with the Christmas spirit of giving and sharing. It is showcasing the importance of being aware of those in need, even in the midst of all the revelry and celebrations. The lyrics build up a chain of communication, from the night wind, to the little lamb, to the shepherd boy and finally, to the king. This is an allegory of how one small voice can make a huge difference when it comes to something important.

A Christmas song for children? My God, even I as grown up can enjoy it. What a voice and such a beautifull song. Dear Lord, I only can thank you for a person like Susan.

Amazing. Words cannot describe this woman's angelic voice. This is how I imagine the angels in heaven sound when praising God.

I love this song - I listen to it every Christmas & I think Susans version is better than some as she sings it as with such feeling & with the backing of a proper choir it is a pleasure to listen to. So many sing this song with a beat or they don't know how to sing the song/line a certain way but this version is just lovely to hear it as it is meant to be - a chrismas carol. I was disappointed that the last verse was not sung - but I can't complain - Susan sings it with such grace & tenderness.

Susan has a gift with her beautiful voice. I adore her. This Christmas Song/Hymn has always been my favourite & with other artists doing their versions just don't try to capture the message this beautiful song means. Susan has captured the meaning of this song in the way that it was & is meant to be sung. Slow &with a Choir. My only nitpick is that she has left out the last verse and chorus of this song. But other than this it is a beautiful version of such a classical/biblical hymn.
