Enjoy The Silence
Swift Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Words like violence, break the silence.
Come crashing in, into my little world.
Painful to me, pierce right through me.
Can't you understand, oh my little girl.
All I ever wanted, all I ever needed
Is here in my arms. words are very
Unnecessary, they can only do harm.
Vows are spoken, to be broken. feelings
Are intense, words are trivial, pleasures
Remain, so does the pain. words are
Meaningless, and forgettable.
All I ever wanted, all I ever needed,
Is here in my arms. words are very

Unnecessary, they can only do harm.
Enjoy the silence

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Swift's song, Enjoy the Silence, capture the essence of the need for silence in our lives amidst the chaos of the world around us. The opening lines, "Words like violence, break the silence," convey the idea that words can be powerful enough to disrupt the peaceful state of silence. The subsequent lines, "Come crashing in, into my little world. Painful to me, pierce right through me," suggest how the sound of words can be intrusive and painful, overwhelming the listener's senses.

As the song progresses, we hear the singer's belief that words are unnecessary and can often do more harm than good. This is especially evident in the line, "Words are meaningless and forgettable," which underscores the idea that sometimes silence is more effective in expressing one's feelings than words. However, amidst this perspective, there is a subtle recognition of the power of words, as seen in the line, "Vows are spoken to be broken. Feelings are intense, words are trivial." It suggests that, while words can be trivial, they can also convey deep emotions, and even the best intentions can be broken by the reality of human nature.

In conclusion, Enjoy the Silence by Swift is a poignant reminder of the importance of silence in our lives. It captures the beauty of silence and the consequences of overusing words. The lyrics suggest that words can be overwhelming and painful while silence, on the other hand, has the power to express emotions more effectively than words ever could.
