And you're a liar, at least all of your friends are
And so am I, just typically drowned in my car
It's my party and I'll cry to the end
You must try harder than kissing all of my friends, you

Yeah it takes a bit more, yeah it takes a bit more than you
It takes a bit more, yeah it takes a bit more than you
You're alive, at least as far as I can tell you are
And so am I, you beat me down and then we're back to my car
And it's so ironic how it's only been a year
And it's not my fault that I fucked everybody here

Yeah it takes a bit more, yeah it takes a bit more than you
It takes a bit more, yeah it takes a bit more than you
It takes a bit more, yeah it takes a bit more than you
It takes a bit more, yeah it takes a bit more than you

And I say
Do you wanna dance, do you wanna dance, do you wanna dance
In the bar at the back of the hall?
And I say
Do you wanna dance, do you wanna dance, do you wanna dance
Dance in the back of the hall?

Yeah it takes a bit more, yeah it takes a bit more than you
It takes a bit more, yeah it takes a bit more than you

It takes a bit more, yeah it takes a bit more than you
It takes a bit more, yeah it takes a bit more than you

Overall Meaning

In "Y O U," The 1975 addresses a past relationship in which both parties were unfaithful. The singer reveals that the person they were with was a liar, and so were their friends. The singer also admits to being unfaithful and feels drowned in their car, a metaphor that suggests the suffocating feeling of being trapped in a relationship with no escape. The singer then declares that it is their party and they'll cry if they want to, meaning that even though the relationship has ended badly, they're still entitled to mourn the loss. The person they were with must try harder than just kissing all their friends to make up for their betrayal. Throughout the song, the singer repeats that it takes more than what the person they were with can offer to fix things between them.

The second verse suggests that even though it's only been a year since the relationship ended, the singer's ex-partner has already moved on and is alive beyond the singer's reach. The singer says that the ex-partner beat them down, but they're back in their car together, showing that the relationship is cyclical and toxic. The singer then acknowledges their own mistakes, saying that it's not their fault that they have slept with everyone at the party. So, even though both parties were guilty of infidelity, the singer seems to feel that they got the worst of it.

The chorus is the singer's declaration that it takes more than what their ex-partner can offer to fix things between them. They want the person to fight harder to make amends. The repeated phrase "It takes a bit more than you" emphasizes that the singer wants more effort and dedication from their ex.
