After college, Mahal moved to Los Angeles and formed the group Rising Sons with Ry Cooder in 1964. The group signed with Columbia Records and released one single and recorded another album which was not released by Columbia until 1992. Taj, frustrated with the mixed reaction to his music quit the group and went solo. Still with Columbia, he released a well received, self titled album in 1968, and based on its success released a second album, Natch'l Blues that same year. Two very different records - Giant Step, with his electric band, and solo De Ole Folks at Home - were released in 1969 together as a double album. This firmly established Taj as an American blues original. The double album The Real Thing, captured him live at this time, with a horn section.
He has received two Grammy awards in the category "Best Contemporary Blues Album", the first in 1997 for Señor Blues, and again in 2000 for Shoutin' in Key. He has performed on various film soundtracks including Sounder and Blues Brothers 2000, in which he also appeared.
Farther On Down The Road
Taj Mahal Lyrics

You will accompany me
Yes, further on down the road
You will accompany me
Every time I think about
Your sweet love
Shining' down on me like the sun
I don't remember any old cold days
Goin' farther on down the road
You will accompany me
If there's fools in this life
Then a happy fool is what I wanna be
So I'll be glad to learn about you, baby
You can learn a thing or two about me
But then if we ever should get down
And things really got sad
You know we could cheer each other up
And things wouldn't be that bad, baby
If I'm gonna be a fool in this life
Just want to be a fool for you, darlin'
Day by day, just one step at a time
Girl, you've been so sweet
Restore my peace of mind
And I don't care what anybody knows
And I don't care what anybody might say
With lovin' in my corner each and every day
And I wanna thank you for that, baby
Just want you to go with me thru time
And every step of the way
Farther on down the road
Farther on down the road
I know baby
You can say further on
Further on
Gonna turn around.
In the song "Farther On Down The Road," Taj Mahal sings about a love that will endure through life's journey. He envisions a future where he travels down the road with his lover by his side, through both joyful moments and tough times. Taj Mahal expresses his gratitude for the love that his significant other gives him, as it brings him peace and helps him to overcome any obstacles.
Throughout the verses, Taj Mahal describes the nature of his relationship with his partner. He sees himself as a happy fool, ready to learn more about his lover, and eager to support each other in times of sadness. He is not concerned with what people might say or think about their relationship, as long as he has love in his life. He also acknowledges that love is reciprocal and that he is willing to go through life with his significant other by his side.
Overall, "Farther On Down The Road" is a beautiful love song that expresses Taj Mahal's belief in the power of love to overcome life's challenges. It is a reminder that love is a journey that we take with someone we love, and that the road ahead may be bumpy, but with the right person beside us, we can weather any storm.
