Tallahassee native here, born and raised. I did my undergrad at UF and have spent a lot of time visiting Jacksonville and Orlando. I'd say this video is pretty good, raises a lot of valid points that I don't disagree with, but I will add some nuance. Keep in mind though that I live in the suburbs, I'm a gator, and although I go downtown now and then I rarely have reason to, certainly not during rush hour. Also, we are definitely more Georgia than Florida.
A lot of the roads downtown are certainly narrow; that's why the speed limits there are low, I think. It's annoying and I make sure never to go downtown during rush hour, though you may not have that choice, especially not if you work for FSU or the courthouse. But downtown is a very small part of the city; the rest of it has big roads and good speed limits. So if you're not planning to work downtown, don't worry about it. And honestly, compared to Orlando and its highways, Tallahassee is heaven.
As for the rain, it pretty much never rains except summer, it seems like. But during summer, mainly May and some of June, you'll get a lot of rain. Like it'll rain on and off all day, though of course there are spans of days and even weeks when it's nothing but Florida sun and heat. The rest of the year you'll hardly notice it. An upside to the rain though is skim-boarding; you take a skim board or the plastic top to storage bin and slide down a hill in the rain. It's like sledding but gloriously muddy.
We definitely have a poverty problem, but it's not super visible. There are tons of homeless people downtown, though. Especially in the parks. We have quite lovely downtown parks; there are white Christmas lights in the trees year round, and they often host events like the Farmer's Market, Downtown Get Down, etc.
No beaches, but we do have rivers for tubing (Bear Paw, etc.), and a lot of large nature parks and trails. There's Maclay Gardens, a historic early 1900s home and extensive gardens that is suuuper stunning in February because it's filled with magnolias (the kind that are bursting with pink and white flowers with no leaves) and camellias. There's Dorothy B. Ovens, another garden park that is lit up with tons of Xmas lights in winter. There's also Wakulla Springs, a historic hotel (looks kind of late 1800s, early 1900s, and has its own restaurant, ice cream parlor, and gift shop) that offers glass bottom boats tours where you can see manatees, gators, and birds, swimming in the icy springs (which you definitely will enjoy in summer), and the largest underwater cave system in North America, great for cave divers. There's also First Friday; on the first Friday of every month people gather in Railroad Square to wander the art galleries, vintage shops, etc. and enjoy local food, music, staged battles with foam weapons, and a lot of blatant weed smoking.
Crime? Yeah, I've heard it's contributed to by the fact that a lot of cocaine is moved up through Tally to the rest of the country. Don't know if that's actually true.
Alligators? Generally pretty cool. Like I said, we swim in the springs and rivers. Make sure wherever you're swimming it's someplace that other people often do; alligators avoid these places cause we're loud and obnoxious. Never in 24 years seen one crossing the street, though they certainly will when they're moving from one body of water to another,. Just assume that in any lake you see there are gators. You can certainly go fishing, but I wouldn't let pets or kids near the water, and don't go into high grass. We've also got plenty of water moccasins. But really I don't see alligators as a problem. Generally once they grow past 4 ft in a residential area people call to have them removed. If you're from up north just do a bit of research before you come and teach your kids what they need to know.
Some of the things I don't like about living here; I wish there were more Asian restaurants. You can definitely get your fix, but there's only 1 Indian one and it's a 25-30 minute drive from me T-T There are 2 or 3 places to get boba, but they're downtown. There's no Lush or Cheesecake Factory like Orlando and Jax, and I usually will drive to Orlando and fly from there because it's cheaper, which is galling when you're flying north. There's a lot of cool places to check out, but not nearly as many as Jax and Orlando.
If you do come, Thomasville is a short ride away; it's a cool small town with a lot of old buildings and a really cute downtown. Good for shopping and eating. Like the video said, if you wanna go to the beach go to St. George island. Rent a bike to explore the island, go to Harry A's, the go-to bar and resturant, and check out the ice cream shops. Right next to St. George is Apalachicola, another small town with great food and shopping. It's really quite beautiful, and they're famous for their oysters. On your way down, stop in Crawfordville and check out their nursery; they have all sorts of rare and/or exotic plants, all that grow well in the area. If you haven't had persimmons (the big kind that are really soft when they're ready to eat, not the crunchy kind) you need to try 'em.

10. The college town thing is subjective
9. If you're around FSU the drivers are bad, but traffic is actually pretty good in Tallahassee outside of the very northside of town.
8. 😂😂 The airport is awesome if you have 💲💲💲, so that is dead on. The bonus is you can show up 10 minutes before the flight.
7. The weather is pretty wild, but it doesn't get too too cold.
6. The poverty is pretty bad, but good point about the students being added in to the equation.
5. 😂 Yeah, beaches aren't close.
4. Crime is bad if you're involved with criminals, but it's not random crime.
3. It depends on the industry you're trying to get into. State jobs aren't as hard to get as they used to, but they're not as good as they used to either.
2. Alligators aren't seen that often, I've seen one small one in the neighborhood in the 18 years I've been here.
1. There are things to do outside, but a lot of them are more hidden gems. I suggest looking at trip advisor. And Tallahassee does have beautiful canopy roads.

Lived here all my life except during my military service. Love it, and I’ll never leave.
1. The issue of traffic during FSU games is totally not an issue. Maybe if you live within a mile of the stadium...
2. The city is run by liberals and has a crime problem. If you buy a home on the northeast side of town you’re fine.
3. Traffic. Again, Tallahassee has a liberal government and there’s only been one NEW road project in about 30-40 years. This is due to what I like to call the Poking Along Society... These are people that find some flaw in any and every proposed road improvement, and the government caves every time. That’s why you can’t get from one place to the next, you always have to go somewhere else first.
4. It is a beautiful city. There’s no doubt about it. This is, in part, due to the liberals and the Poking Along Society.. They make awesome sign and shrubbery ordinances, and as a result the place is beautiful, although expensive to develop. Also, the truly beautiful canopy roads are another major factor to the traffic narrow roads and traffic problems, not to mention many people die when they slam into oak trees located six feet from the pavement. You can see the marks of death on trees everywhere. I lost a 22 year old niece to one of these trees a few years ago.
5. One of the biggest reasons not to move to Tallahassee is the summer heat! Man. It is hot and humid, and in most areas there is absolutely no breeze. You will totally sweat your butt off. On the flip side, the winters are mild and spring and fall are beautiful.
6. Power outages. Again, much of this is due to the effort to retain the canopy roads. They literally trim the trees so the power lines pass right through the middle. It’s no wonder the power goes out frequently in many places. Fortunately, my neighborhood has underground utilities and we’ve had only one major power outage in 25 years. It was during a hurricane a couple of years ago. There was one small tree leaning against he feeder to our substation, and once the crews arrived it took them about an hour to get us up and running again. We are far enough from the coast that major structural damage from hurricanes would be extremely rare. Maybe a tree falling, or a small tornado. But if you’re in a rural area, it might be a good idea to get a Generac Generator system stalled. They run off natural gas, and you’ll be good to go. Honestly, I don’t need one. Most people can live without electricity for a while. I almost went to work for a generator company a while back and met a young military family with one baby and another on the way. The soldier was about to be deployed and was scrambling to get his family all set before he shipped out. In that case, I think it’s definitely worth it.
7. As far as he “nothing to do” comment... that’s ridiculous! I mean, what do you want to do? Golf, fresh water fishing, salt water fishing, an hour from some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, hunting, shooting sports (my thing), water skiing, mountain biking, they have a symphony and many kinds of cultural events.. Not to mention the absolutely beautiful rivers that are great for paddle boating. If you can’t find something to do the problem is not Tallahassee, it’s you!
8. I think the biggest problem in Tallahassee is their opposition to manufacturing. They have such a bad reputation that nobody will manufacture here. This has a serious impact on the poverty. The liberals running the colleges and government say they want to help low income families, but they do everything they can to keep out companies that can bring these people good paying jobs. It’s sad. They brought in one company about 15 years ago. I helped them move from Canada. It was a huge success and a tremendous benefit to the community, but they haven’t done anything since.
9. If you’re thinking of moving to town or starting a business here, consider staying outside the city limits. Save money on utilities, taxes, and the general nonsense with all their regulations.
10. I love Tallahassee. It’s not too big or too small. It’s beautiful. And there IS plenty to do around here. It’s a great place to raise a family. It’s got a good university. And most people are friendly. Just the right amount of southern charm.

CORRECTION: It actually snowed in Tallahassee on January 3, 2018.  😂😂😂

TheYoutuber

Yeah but just barely 😭

LIvidUniform

I was thinking that when he said it, first and only time I’ve seen snow.

DisneyDame

It was great, I woke up wondering what the hell was wrong with the roof because I hadn't heard THAT since I lived in Canada. Sure it melted by noon but the snowfall was pretty darn cool if you were awake for it. I took a video myself lol

LofiWackPainting

Yeah what? 0.00009 centimeter of snow?

Elder default

It was like ice, not rlly snow and no one told me this and I busted my ass

I moved to Tallahassee a year and a half ago from California. Crime doesn't seem to be an issue at all, and i live is the 3rd "worst" neighborhood in Tallahassee. (the most crime problematic areas are Frenchtown, Griffin Heights, and Bond). There aren't that many homeless, and many fewer than in California. The colleges are beautiful brick buildings and yes, during games, the areas around
the colleges is crowded and streets blocked, but it's not something that is really detrimental. Tallahassee is hilly, and forested everywhere, and the traffic isn't bad at all. Drivers are no worse than California.
I think the quality of life here is pretty good. It is not easy to make friends here. It's a very family oriented place and rather insular. Also, it is not so easy understanding some of the dialects here, but
people are polite and patient. Overall, despite the alligators, thumbs up.
