The Way You Move
Tanita Tikaram Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
People dancing close together
Where the moonlight finds the crowd
And when you know there's
No place better
I love the way you move
To the rhythm when he's dancing
And I can see that every joy
And every sorrow flows
Right through him
If I could only change my ways
To move the way you move
If I could only change my ways
To move the way you move
When I think back to the nights
I lose myself among the shadows
When I think back to those nights
I almost lost myself to you
So show me now and tell me how
Cos I love the way you move
I love the way you move
I love the way you move
I love the way you move
The lyrics to Tanita Tikaram's song "The Way You Move" are about the joy of dancing and the admiration for someone who dances freely and unrestrainedly. The singer is drawn to the sound of people dancing close together, under moonlight, in a place where they belong. She loves the way the boy she sees on the dance floor throws his head back, lost in the rhythm of the music, and expresses every joy and sorrow through his dance.
The singer longs to move the way the boy does, to dance freely and let go of her inhibitions. She reminisces about the nights where she was lost among the shadows of the dance floor and almost lost herself to the person she admires.
The song is a testament to the power of dancing to free oneself from the constraints of everyday life and let the body and the soul express themselves at their fullest. The singer is in awe of the pure joy that emanates from the boy's movements and wishes to be like him, to dance the way he does without fear or self-consciousness. It is a song about liberation, self-expression and admiration for the beauty of the human body in motion.

Every time I hear the sound of
Whenever I hear the sound of people dancing close together
People dancing close together
Individuals moving rhythmically, close to one another
Where the moonlight finds the crowd
In an open space where there's nothing but bright moonlight
And when you know there's
Only possible when you recognize that
No place better
The moment is perfect in every possible way
I love the way you move
I adore the way you move, dance or sway
There's a boy who throws his head back
There's a guy who moves exuberantly
To the rhythm when he's dancing
He moves in sync with the music while he's dancing
And I can see that every joy
It allows me to notice that all of the happiness he experiences
And every sorrow flows
As well as all of the pain he has felt
Right through him
Moves through him immersively
If I could only change my ways
If only I could shift or adjust myself
To move the way you move
Move in a similar way to how you dance or sway
When I think back to the nights
Sometimes when I reflect on the evenings gone by
I lose myself among the shadows
I lose myself in the obscurity of the ambiance that surrounds us
When I think back to those nights
When I recall that time long gone
I almost lost myself to you
I almost lost myself in your dance or movements
So show me now and tell me how
Then demonstrate to me at this moment and enlighten me
Cos I love the way you move
Because of the way you move or sway, I am fond of you
I love the way you move
I am deeply in love with the way you move
I love the way you move
There's no doubt about it, I love the way you move
