Love Letters in the Sand
Taylor Blake & Mac Wiseman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On a day like today
We passed the time away
Writing love letters in the sand

How you laughed when I cried
Each time I saw the tide
Take our love letters from the sand
You made a vow that you would ever be true
But somehow that vow meant nothing to you

Now my broken heart aches
With every wave that breaks
Over love letters in the sand

Now my broken heart aches

With every wave that breaks
Over love letters in the sand

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Taylor Blake and Mac Wiseman's "Love Letters In The Sand" depicts a picturesque view of two lovers enjoying themselves on the beach, writing love letters in the sand. However, the tone of the song takes a turn when the singer realizes that their partner's vow of being true was empty, and their love letters are now being washed away by the waves. The lyrics convey a sense of heartache and betrayal as the singer's broken heart aches with every wave that washes over their love letters in the sand.

The chorus of the song reinforces the pain of the singer and their feeling of loss as they watch their intimate moments together be taken away by the ocean. The lyrics highlight the ephemeral nature of love and how even though it may seem immortal, it can be quickly swept away.

Overall, the song is an emotional and poetic representation of heartbreak and the transience of love.

I am so glad I stumbled upon this gem whilst searching for Doc & Merle Watson 1970's performances (live recordings.) Man, I miss those early '70s bluegrass festivals, like the many held here in my home state of North Carolina (also the home state of Doc & Merle, of whom I was fortunate to enjoy many performances.) I also got to enjoy Doc Watson several times when he played at Appalachian State University, during Appalachian Regional Conferences .as well as numerous campus shows and festivals. Thank you for all your work and for sharing this musical delight!
