Battlefield
Taylor Hicks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I live on a battlefield
Surrounded by the ruins of the love we built
And then destroyed between us
The smoke has cleared
As I stumble through the rubble
I'm dazed, seeing double
And I'm truly mystified
My new home is a shell hole filled
With tears and muddy water
And bits of broken heart
All around there is desolation
And scenes of devastation
Of a love been torn apart
I live on a battlefield
I live on a battlefield

I live on a battlefield
The one where not one single drop of blood has spilled
Is no less horrifying
Sweet memories, memories
Of a bygone situation
Now shattered lord and battered
Lie scattered all around

My new home is a shell hole filled
With tears and muddy water
Yes and bits of broken heart
All around there is desolation
And scenes of devastation
Of a love been torn apart
I live on a battlefield
I live on a battlefield

Everything that can has gone wrong
(I live on a battlefield)
It's gonna take spine to carry on
(I live on a battlefield)
Like a drowning man coming up for air
(I live on a battlefield)
I'm looking for another survivor
But I can't see one anywhere

My new home is filled with muddy water
All around there's bits of broken heart
My world is one of desolation
And scenes of devastation
There is no consolation
For a love been torn apart
I live on a battlefield
I live on a battlefield

I live on a battlefield, battlefield
I live on a battlefield

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Taylor Hicks’s song “I Live On a Battlefield” describe the aftermath of a failed relationship. The singer is living in the ruins of the love he built with his partner, which was destroyed between them. He compares the desolation of his current situation to a battlefield, with scenes of devastation all around him. The memories of their past love are now shattered and scattered. He’s looking for another survivor, but he can’t see one anywhere.

The repeated “I live on a battlefield” line in the chorus emphasizes the idea that the singer’s life has become like a warzone. He’s constantly under attack, but there’s no one to fight against. The battle is internal, within himself, as he struggles to come to terms with the loss of his love. The metaphor of a battlefield provides a powerful image to describe the pain and devastation of a broken relationship.

The lyrics also touch upon the theme of resilience. The singer acknowledges that “everything that can has gone wrong,” but he also recognizes that he needs to find the strength to carry on. The line “It’s gonna take spine to carry on” shows that he understands the difficult road ahead of him, but he’s willing to face it head-on. Despite the desolation and devastation around him, he’s searching for hope and a way to move forward.

Nice! I also love the way Taylor Hicks performs I Live On A Battlefield during his concerts. It's great the way he tags songs to it, too.

@brucec43 Search for Taylor's live version of this song at the Canyon Club w/ Josh Smith. Shows what he can really do with this song, plus he gives Nick Lowe props during his intro.

Found this while looking for Nick's vetsion. Didn't know this existed. Expected it to suck. Was pleasantly surprised, I will say. I still love Carrack's version. But check out 'live from Daryl's house'(Google it) to see a most excellent performance of this tune by Nick Lowe and Daryl Hall. Seriously good.

rustypeckerhead

I prefer Nick Lowe's version. Diana Ross really.
