Nineteen
Teganandsara Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I felt you in my legs
Before I ever met you
And when I lay beside you
For the first time I told you

I feel you in my heart and I don't even know you
And now we're saying bye, bye, bye
And now we're saying bye, bye, bye
I was nineteen, calling me

I felt you in my life before I ever thought to
I need to lay down beside you and tell you
I feel you in my heart and I don't even know you
And now we're saying bye, bye, bye
And now were saying bye, bye, bye

I was nineteen
Calling me
I was nineteen
Calling me

Stayed inside I was so upset
Flew back home to where we met
Cooked up a plan for success
I was all alone you were all I had
You were all I
I was yours right?

I was nineteen
Calling me

I was nineteen
Calling me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Teganandsara’s song “Nineteen” talk about the feeling of being in love with someone even before you've met them. The song speaks about sensing a connection with someone and feeling their presence even before you've seen them, touched them or met them face to face. The chorus repeats the line "I feel you in my heart and I don't even know you" implying that the singer is deeply in love and feeling the other person's presence intensely. The song mentions the first time the singer meets the person they feel so connected to and admits to telling them “I feel you in my heart” almost as if they couldn't contain the feeling anymore.

As the song progresses, it becomes clear that something has gone wrong in the relationship, and they are now parting ways. The lines "now we're saying bye, bye, bye" imply a sense of finality or closure. However, despite the goodbye, the singer still feels a connection. The lyrics suggest that the singer was 19 when they met this person and that this love carries considerable significance for the singer even today.

Overall, the song speaks to the possibility of a metaphysical connection between people and explores the idea that sometimes we can feel somebody's presence long before we meet them.

A girl I used to talk to named Renae showed me this song. We never got to meet but would talk every single day. She was from Northridge, California. I lost contact with her but have tried to find her for years. Renae, if you're reading this, this is Heather. I still think about you to this day and wish we could have seen where our lives could have gone if we met. Maybe one day we will get a chance.

@viaerkul

i hope u find her !

I’m 27 years old now but about 10 years ago when I was 15/16 this album really did it for me. It’s Christmas morning and Tegan and Sara randomly popped into my head so I’m going down nostalgia Lane and listening to the whole album again because I was so obsessed with it freshman year of high school. This album really made an impact on me, and 10 years later, it still does. I used to walk around town with my best friend playing this on my freaking PSP (play station portable)! Hahaha. They don’t even make that console anymore lol. I even cut my hair like them during this time! Haha

I feel you in my heart, and I don’t even know you

I'm 42 now. When I first heard this it was the same. Honesty holds over time like that.

Were the same age. I couldn't agree more. 💖 Cheers to the future with a loving nod to our past 💫

This song has always meant so much to me. Im 27 now, but I also had some traumatic/important relationship at 19 that never really left me. Goals is performing this on stage with them some day since the song helped me through so much growing up before I made music.
