Awesome presentation of the material. You’re a true teacher. You can flat out play, but that’s not what’s making you a great teacher. Lots of incredible players who can’t teach. Not bashing those guys because teaching is a skill. You got that skill. I could go on and on about what makes your lessons work so well for people studying with you but there is no need to because everybody that comes back to you already knows it.
Im not a beginner but watched anyway because I wanted to know your approach to independence because I knew your take on this problem would help me approach some other aspect of where I have problems. Practice is obviously indispensable. But the ideas are as critical. How to think about something how to mentally approach something. You can practice all you want and still struggle. Many times it’s looking at something in a different way. I only developed the that basic level of independence shown in this video through frustration and way to much time and effort. I know that if I would have had this video I would not have been frustrated, I wouldn’t have had days of feeling depressed that I would forever suck and it would have come together for me much quicker.
Thanks for the work you put into this. I personally appreciate you and it also amazes me how there are people like you who sacrifice their time and money to just help a fellow drummer.
Whether you know it or not, I think you are one of the most important people in the entire professional drum world today. If the was a compiled list made by any industry journal or publication your name should be on it

Yea, I like playing that stuff that you played at the intro. Love 16th notes but especially 32nd note grooves and after drumming for 56 years that’s what I’m challenged with. What I dig about your’s and other drummers who demonstrate how not to play something is that you can actually play it- that’s quite challenging. Good job Rob as always- you’re a gifted instructor.

You have a gift for teaching Rob. I took lessons back in the 80's from a very, very good drummer. The problem was he wasn't a very good teacher. He assumed I knew things he was talking about when I didn't, showed me things instead of taking the time to make sure I understood them. I ended up being completely overwhelmed and discouraged. Now I'm turning fifty in a few months and am picking up the drums again after a thirty year layoff. I have been researching online instructors, I plan on picking two or three to follow instruction from. You are the best teacher I've come across by far. You keep it simple and fun without making the lesson feel like a chore. You explain things very well and you inspire me to believe I can start over and do things right this time around. I used to hate practicing, you've made me love it. Thank you so much.

This exercise is so effective! Just count slowly, don't give up your, brain will eventually figure it out. I am a total beginner (just bought my first set a week ago at 52) and after a few hours with this exercise I can do this, not great but I can do it:). Practice Sleep Repeat!

I'm brand new to all of this; I just started playing about 3 weeks ago. I had to slooooow waaaaaaaay doooooown in order to break the 'tie' between my right hand and right foot, but that finally worked. Patience... definitely! I'm looking forward to trying these exercises. Thanks! 😃

@Am I Shadow Banned I've only had drums for 2 days, I recommend learning how to play the main part on snuff by slipknot. Find a video that's just the drumming part and slow it all the way down to 0.5x speed. I learned after a few hours and it really helped my independence

Dude, this is mind blowing. I was struggling with this today (drumming for less than a month now) and imagining hitting the phantom note in the air is working. I was using my hand as the cymbal in the air and my practice pad while doing the kick pedal pattern. I am going at this slowly but I can't wait to do some off beat funky rhythms.

Subscribed. You're an amazing teacher. Played the piano for 22 years, professionally for 5 and I always struggled with hand independence. Only painful repetition allowed me to gain some independence but it never came as naturally to me as I would have liked.

Always been amazed by drummers and their easygoing abilities with timing and doing opposite things with different hands, and always wanted to take up drums myself. This video gives me hope. Thanks man!

Why is this so hard yet Rob makes it look so easy. I'm new to drumming and can get around the kit with basic stuff but needed to challenge myself to improve independence. don't make the same mistake as me, practice this even though it is awfully slow and tedious. I played for a couple of years without doing this and it really messed up with my ability to play different comps and chops. you can do it dude, I believe in you!

Starting off at the age of 7, i remember having that problem myself. It took me about a month to fix it. I didn't really have a method for it, but whatever i did, it worked. And im sure this does too. Now five years later, after school, im a drum educator at my local school, teaching the kids how to play drums!

I noticed my independence sucks first when I tried the swing spang a lang and my kick foot was doing the a-lang with the right hand. Really annoying. But like Rob said, it starts to go away with a lot of repetitions and patience. Cool exercises, man!

Inadvertently corrected a lot of my independence issues practicing the Moeller Method. Playing the kick at various points of the whip. You made mention about really paying attention to subdivisions, blending Moeller and Subdivisions unlocked something mentally. I could see and count a 32nd grid in my head I focused on replacing beats with a kick or some other voice. Since everything was based on breaking down a 32nd beat grid, it was just a matter of practicing sticking a kick at random points in the grid cleanly. It sounds complex, but it's all based off breaking that Moeller stroke into Down wrist up, or down wrist wrist up for that single hand 16th. The kick still follows the right hand, but the stroke is subdivided as needed allowing a kick to be placed anywhere naturally. Eventually it became muscle memory throughout my whole body..
The same thing you're teaching here. You're playing the kick on the AND aka the UP. Playing 8ths on the HH, but the count is a 16ths. My count is 32nds to play in 16ths, 16ths to play in 8ths.

Bro I needed this so very much. I knew that there had to be a way to fix this. My right hand and leg were somehow one limb, they just follow each other. I even felt bad when young teenage drummers begin do all that pro stuff...
I always wanted to search this up, and even with a little practice through your video, and imaginary drum kit, I started to feel them separating. When Ive mastered it, I want to learn how to apply the same principle to other beats and patterns..

This for sure is a problem for anyone starting. I didn't have drums most of my life and ended up learning independence just from air drumming to songs haha. Whatever works man just honestly takes practice. Where I have this problem still is doing a triplet note pattern on the hats.

Hi! I am a grandmother to a 6 years old girl. She loves to learn how to drum. I inquired around for drum lessons for her, but teachers prefer to teach 7 years old. So, she has a year to wait. Her godfather gifted her with a drum set on her 5th birthday and she has been playing it on her own. I've just been drumming less than a year, and besides single kick foot speed this independence thing has tripped me up more than anything. The only time I could get it working was at a really slow bpm, and even then I still couldn't figure out why it worked. That was until I watched this. I had never made the connection between the upstroke with my hand playing the eighth notes and the foot needing to hit on the 16th. Holy crap was this helpful. THANK YOU!!!

When I started messing around with 16th note patterns like this not that long ago I eventually sorta got the “feel” of almost a halftime beat.

Pretending to hit the notes in the air or on a block in the air is a really cool idea!

Great Stuff. Those beats at the beginning are just amazing. Taking this one step further, are there exercises or a video to teach left and right hand independence introducing something such as triplets over an 8th note beat? I play worship at my church and notice alot of the newer modern worship is tom heavy with crazy rhythms (16th and 8th note triplets on rack and floor toms) over a steady 8th note ride or crash. Appreciate all you do.

I play open position, hihat with my left hand snare with my right, and I'm not a lefty. I just started playing drums 3 months ago and I found playing open position much easier! But my left hand playing the hihat sometimes wants to follow my right foot playing the bass. I hope your method will help my independence too!

For the first exercise, which beats do you hit the bass? I think the previous lessons had the bass beats highlighted in a different color (10 basic drumbeats). I’m new to all this and just trying to figure stuff out to help my kid learn (and maybe fulfill my midlife crisis dream as well??? lol). I think I am more of a visual learner. Thanks. ❤️
