Let's Make a Mistake Tonight
Tennis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Let's make a mistake tonight
Like palm trees in the twilight
Let's turn water into wine
We're gonna find something better

Let's cruise in the vesper night
Concrete in the headlights
Wheels set in their arc like gods
We're gonna find something better

For every mile of pavement
You and I making a statement
I don't know what I expected
But now you see what I'm left with

If I see nothing, then nothing's there
I close my eyes tight but I can't remember
You could deny me but I know what I want
I can feel it in my body

Hand on the wheel
Hand on my thigh
Closing our eyes

Let's make a mistake tonight
Concrete in the headlights
Drive west 'til there's nothing left
We're gonna find something better

Whatever's crowding my vision
I will it out of existence
I don't know what I expected
But now you see what I'm left with

If I see nothing, then nothing's there
I close my eyes tight but I can't remember
You could deny me but I know what I want
I can feel it in my body

I don't know what I expected
With every moment suspended
I don't know what I expected
But now you see what I'm left with

I can't help it, I can't walk away
Take my pain with pleasure any day
We live on the ashes
Nothing could get past us
We move faster
I can't help it no
I'd never walk away
Take my pain with pleasure every day
Living on the ashes everything burned past us
We're holding the matches

Your hand on the wheel
Hand on my thigh
Driving all night
Hand on the wheel

Hand on my thigh
Closing our eyes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Let's Make a Mistake Tonight" by Tennis paint a vivid picture of an adventurous and exhilarating night full of spontaneity and freedom. The mention of making a mistake tonight sets the tone for a carefree and unconventional experience, akin to palm trees swaying in the twilight, symbolizing a sense of relaxation and escapism. The desire to turn water into wine hints at a desire for transformation or turning something ordinary into something extraordinary, reflecting a yearning for a change or a breakthrough.

The imagery of cruising in the vesper night with concrete in the headlights evokes a feeling of moving forward into the unknown, with a sense of determination and purpose. The reference to wheels set in their arc like gods suggests a feeling of power and control, as if the characters in the song are embarking on a journey where they dictate their own fate and destiny amid the darkness.

The lyrics also touch upon the idea of self-awareness and introspection, as the singer reflects on their expectations and what they are left with. The repetition of "If I see nothing, then nothing's there" suggests a struggle with perception and reality, highlighting a search for meaning or clarity amidst confusion. The acceptance of knowing what one wants and feeling it in their body signifies a deep sense of intuition and instinct guiding their actions.

The notion of driving west until there's nothing left conveys a sense of limitless possibility and endless exploration, where the characters are on a quest for something better or more fulfilling. The defiance against what crowds their vision and the willingness to will it out of existence showcases a determination to break free from constraints and limitations, seeking a fresh start or a new perspective.

In the final verses, the lyrics delve into themes of resilience and embracing pain as part of the human experience. The mention of living on the ashes and holding the matches suggests a willingness to confront challenges and difficulties head-on, finding strength in adversity and celebrating the ability to move forward despite past struggles. The repeated imagery of hands on the wheel and thighs, along with the act of closing their eyes, symbolizes a sense of intimacy, trust, and surrender – both to the unknown journey ahead and to the emotions and sensations that come with it.

This song is a masterpiece of indie pop. The lyrics are so catchy and relatable, the melody is smooth and dreamy, and the visuals are stunning and nostalgic. Tennis is such an underrated band, they deserve more recognition and appreciation. They always deliver quality music and videos, and this one is no exception. Let’s make a mistake tonight and support them by streaming and sharing their songs!

Outstanding as always. I can probably say (after around 11 years of listening to Tennis) that they're my favourite band of all time. The evolution of their style has been so elegant and refined, trying new stuff without sounding forced or gimmicky. Long live Tennis!

I can’t believe how beautifully they have transitioned and grown and stayed so consistently amazing. I remember seeing them for the first time on their Cape Dory mini tour in San Francisco at Hotel Utah in like….2009 it must have been. Wow. Time flies…That tiny club was PACKED!

A lot of music has come and gone in the last 15 years, but Tennis never disappoints. Always love hearing what you both have dreamed up🎾

@counterpuncher01

I'm 50 years old and they are the best band of all time

My 4 year old daughter is singing this song in the car and has asked me 3 times to add this song to her spotify playlist. I keep saying to her that it is on the playlist. She loves Tennis, Tame Impala, and Mark Ronson. We play this song at least once a drive in the vehicle.
