One Night with the Valet
Tennis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

White doves come down
I'm out here standing in the wind
And even now I'm tempted by the face of love
I feel it coming like a flood

Finding myself tempted by the face of love
Really fear that I could never get enough
I'm riding high up watching over silent things
Like pearls scattered at our feet

Talk down, head in the clouds
You get yours from us
My baby, in a physical world
Tell me you get yours from us

(Not enough doors)
Talk down, head in the clouds (not enough heat)
You get yours from us
(Not enough crowds)
My baby, in a physical world (not enough heat)
Tell me you get yours from us

I'm riding high up watching over silent things
Like pearls scattered at our feet

And even now, I'm tempted by the face of love
I feel it coming like a flood

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tennis's song One Night with the Valet describe the inner conflict of the singer who finds themselves tempted by the face of love but also overwhelmed by fear that they will never be able to get enough. The song opens with the imagery of white doves descending and the singer standing in the wind, signaling a sense of both peace and restlessness. As the song progresses, the singer describes their experience of watching over silent things like pearls scattered at their feet, perhaps indicating a sense of detachment or observation rather than full immersion into the experience of love.

Throughout the song, the singer repeats the phrase "Talk down, head in the clouds," possibly suggesting a sense of self-doubt or feeling talked down to by others around them. They then ask their lover if they get theirs from "us," implying a shared experience or connection between them. The final lines of the song repeat the earlier themes of feeling tempted by the face of love and sensing it coming like a flood.

Overall, the lyrics seem to convey a sense of being caught between opposing forces - temptation and fear, observation and immersion, detachment and connection. The imagery of pearls, white doves, and floods adds a dreamy and ethereal quality to the song, suggesting perhaps that these opposing forces are part of a larger, universal experience of love and human connection.

Woah, that’s so odd. I just rediscovered Tennis this morning after not listening to them for about 5 years, and then they posted a new song minutes after I checked to see if they had any new tracks recently. That’s destiny right there.

I'm in a similar position, I heard Anthony Fantano joking about their first album and I remember thinking "I kinda liked that one" So I had to check if there was new music and holy damn I'm glad I did.

@Shelton Bradshaw I only discovered them last year or so, but fell in love.

I was so shocked to hear them on Rick and Morty. I figured they might blow up after that.... but was sorely disappointed.

I'm sure they're happy with what they've achieved, I just hope as many people as possible get to hear their groovey tracks :^)

@Shelton Bradshaw sometimes i just don't vibe with a band for a bit, and then years later i think like, i should listen to them again.

Every single time there's a new music video, everything about them is so perfect. This one feels so immersive to me that I feel like I'm welcomed to a completely different place and feeling.

Their music always invokes the same feelings as being purely and unconditionally in love. So beautiful and unlike anything else in the music industry these days.

I don't understand how every single song they make is a hit. Beyond talented.

Alaina & Patrick really took a new musical direction with this one, and I'm so so excited for what Pollen is going to sound like as a whole!! This feels like a beautiful mix of a lot of elements I adored about their past music just built upon in a way that feels different but also so uniquely them. Alaina is just a vision, always so ethereal!! 😭 I adore the vibes of this video and I can't wait to see more. Such a crime this is so short, it really feels like getting a glimpse into a world of love & passion.
