The idea for the project began one day a couple of years ago when Alaina made fun of Patrick for playing tennis in college. A year later the two fled their hometown Denver to spend eight months sailing and exploring the North Atlantic coast. During their adventures they began writing music together documenting their experiences. The Longboat Pass Songfacts reports that the pair eventually recorded their songs. The resulting album, Cape Dory, is about their time on the seas, the majority of the tracks being about the difficulties they experienced during their trip.
There other artists with the same name:
2. Australian Indie band containing two brothers, two cousins and a mystery bass player. Tennis have left the halcyon days of art school behind in pursuit of the perfect musical storm. Tennis played their first gig at a strip club in Surry Hills circa ā06, simultaneously debuting in Sydneyās indie and adult entertainment scenes.
Pursuing the former rather than the latter, Tennis have since graced the stages of many more credible venues, supporting the likes of; Matt & Kim(USA), The Ruby Suns(NZ), Wolf and Cub, Children Collide, Lost Valentinos, Tame Impala and The Holidays. Their colliding beats, wild rhythms, melodic vocals and stark atmospheres meld into a festive music de force driving listeners into a sweaty rapture.

Wooden Sweets (CD, 2000)
Duckshelf / Interview (7", Expanding 2001)

Please Don't Ruin This For Me

Would you lift a veil to take a peek?
Hold a mirror up to me
Mirror back my unbelief
Please don't ruin this for me
I have everything I need
Please don't ruin this for me
Build an alter, stoke the flame
Speak half truths that sound arcane
All my dreams so deeply hidden
Rise up to my throat unbidden
All the comforts I forsake
Like afterlives and divine fate
Forge your own way merrily
Fill the world with new meaning
Please don't ruin this for me
I have everything I need
Please don't ruin this for me
I have everything I need, yeah
In the song "Please Don't Ruin This For Me," Tennis explores the idea of holding onto one's personal beliefs and experiences amidst the pressure to conform to societal expectations. The lyrics are filled with vivid imagery and metaphors that create a mystical, ethereal tone. The first verse asks if the listener has ever encountered something unexpected, represented by a serpent speaking, and if they are willing to explore it further despite the risk of exposing one's vulnerabilities, represented by lifting a veil. The second verse describes the singer's inner struggles, including their doubts and fears, which are reflected back to them by a mirror.
The chorus, "Please don't ruin this for me, I have everything I need," can be interpreted in two ways. Firstly, it could be a plea to those who would try to convince the singer to abandon their beliefs and ideals, asking them not to shatter their sense of fulfillment and purpose. Alternatively, it could be a declaration of the singer's confidence and contentment in their own path, asserting that they do not need external validation to be happy. The rest of the song encourages listeners to forge their own way and find new meaning in their lives without compromising their individuality.
Overall, "Please Don't Ruin This For Me" is a beautiful meditation on the importance of staying true to oneself in the face of societal pressures. Tennis's use of poetic language and haunting melodies make for a truly captivating listening experience.
