PILLS
The Ambulance Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Slip into the warm of a touch
When the photograph of so much
Once you're gone
I came home, but my key didn't unlock the door

Took a million for everyone
Time should have overcome
With your luck and my word
But I didn't have one

So I'll be on my own
You're more than I can lose
I love you for the time that you give
My sugar pill

Seven stories they'll have to climb
To find out what we've done
To let them all be gone
But can't you read the sign?

Burn me up and mix me with salt
Bluegrass and a walk on the sun
And the one visiting those
Just where they go

So I'll be on my own
You're more than I can lose
And now I'm taking more than my fill

My sugar pill
My sugar pill

My sugar pill
My sugar pill

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Ambulance's song "Pills" seem to delve into themes of longing, nostalgia, and possibly substance abuse. The opening lines, "Slip into the warm of a touch, When the photograph of so much," appear to convey a sense of seeking solace in memories or fleeting moments of intimacy. The imagery of coming home but not being able to unlock the door with the key symbolizes a sense of being locked out or unable to access something important or familiar.

The mention of taking "a million for everyone" and feeling like time should have overcome something suggests a feeling of being overwhelmed or burdened by responsibilities or expectations. The line "But I didn't have one" could imply a lack of agency or control in a situation. The singer seems resigned to being on their own, perhaps feeling disconnected or isolated from a significant other.

The lyrics also touch on a sense of recklessness or experimentation, with references to burning up and mixing with salt, as well as allusions to bluegrass music and walking on the sun. These elements evoke a sense of escapism or seeking transcendence through altered states of consciousness or experiences. The repeated refrain of "My sugar pill" could symbolize a form of escapism or coping mechanism, suggesting a reliance on something external to numb or distract from overwhelming emotions.

The mention of climbing seven stories to uncover past actions and the plea to read the sign could indicate a sense of guilt, secrecy, or hidden truths that are being confronted or ignored. The closing lines, repeating "My sugar pill," suggest a fixation or dependency on a temporary solution or distraction. Overall, the song seems to convey a mix of yearning, escapism, and introspection, exploring complex emotions and experiences through vivid imagery and metaphorical language.

I love that they took her to school. They get an A+ for their commitment to their patients.

Imp Again!~

If anyone says Bonnie was faking panicking for attention cuz she "doesn't look like she was panicking", I will personally fight them. Panic attacks don't all look like they do in the movies, but they all are serious.

Trueee one time I had a panic attack at school and I look normal but my heartbeat was palpitating and I can barely breathe but I had to get over the attack cause I looked normal so my teacher won’t allow me to go to the clinic

Samantha Tolentino

Oh and I was already light headed because I can’t breathe properly

Imp Again!~

@Samantha Tolentino RIP 😭 my friend goes silent, dissociates to the point she can't hear anyone, and silently hyperventilates with tiny, tiny breaths. I get overly smiley, trying to pretend nothing is wrong until I just bust out sobbing
