The name comes from the bouffant wigs that are part of the band's distinctive look, worn by singers Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson. Along with Wilson and Pierson, fellow vocalist Fred Schneider, drummer (and later guitarist) Keith Strickland, and guitarist Ricky Wilson (Cindy's older brother) formed the band after a drunken night at a Chinese restaurant. They shared a passion for mixing and matching older styles with a partying, good-time public image, which set them apart from many staid 70s contemporaries.
Their sound is particularly marked by the vocals of Wilson and Pierson, with Kate singing in a slightly deeper voice, along with the generally monotone or spoken-word vocals of Schneider. Aside from their vocals, the band also had a unique New Wave sound that was a combination of 50s and 60s dance music and surf rock, and the unusual guitar-string tunings utilized by Ricky Wilson. Although a clear part of said movement, their music was more experimental than most new wave groups, indulging in all manner of odd vocal and synthesizer effects. The B-52's created a quirky dance vibe that became very popular and their tours have been successful for decades.

Deadbeat Club
The B-52's Lyrics

I was good, I could talk
A mile a minute
On this caffeine buzz I was on
We were really hummin'
We would talk every day for hours
We belong to the deadbeat club
We're gonna find something
We'll dance in the garden in torn sheets in the rain
We'll dance in the garden in torn sheets in the rain
In the rain
We're the deadbeat club (deadbeat club)
We're the deadbeat club (deadbeat club)
We're the deadbeat club (deadbeat club)
We're the deadbeat club
Going down to Allen's for
A twenty-five cent beer
And the jukebox playing real loud
"Ninety-six tears"
We're wild girls walkin' down the street
Wild girls and boys going out for a big time
We're the deadbeat club (deadbeat club)
We're the deadbeat club (deadbeat club)
We're the deadbeat club (deadbeat club)
We're the deadbeat club
Let's go crash that party down
In Normaltown tonight
Then we'll go skinny-dippin'
In the moonlight
We're wild girls walkin' down the street
Wild girls and boys going out for a big time
Anyway we can
We're gonna find something
We'll dance in the garden in torn sheets in the rain
We'll dance in the garden in torn sheets in the rain
In the rain
We're the deadbeat club (deadbeat club)
We're the deadbeat club (deadbeat club)
We're the deadbeat club (deadbeat club)
We're the deadbeat club (deadbeat club)
Oh-oh no, here they come!
The members of the deadbeat club
(Deadbeat club)
Oh-oh no, here they come!
The members of the deadbeat club
(Deadbeat club)
Oh-oh no, here they come!
The members of the deadbeat club
(Deadbeat club)
Oh-oh no, here they come!
The members of the deadbeat club
The B-52's song Deadbeat Club is a fun-filled, high energy celebration of youthful abandon and letting loose. The singer reminisces about the good old days spent with their friends, referred to as the "Deadbeat Club". The first stanza of the song reveals the state of mind of the singer and their friends. The singer rejects the idea of getting a job, stating that they are "trying to think". This is a direct reference to the counterculture movement of the 50s and 60s, where young people were rejecting conventional society and searching for a different way of living. The caffeine buzz that he is on speaks to the frenetic energy that typifies youth, as young people have a seemingly unlimited amount of energy and enthusiasm. The chorus summarizes their lifestyle; they are the Deadbeat Club, and they are going to find something to do any way they can.
The second and third stanzas describe their nights out on the town as young and carefree people. These lines describe the scene of bars and jukeboxes playing loud music, where the singer and their friends enjoy cheap beer and wild times. They then detail their willingness to take a risk, where they crash a party down in Normaltown and go skinny-dipping in the moonlight. The final stanza drives home the idea that they will find something to do no matter what β even if it means dancing in the garden in the rain in torn sheets.
Overall, "Deadbeat Club" is a tongue-in-cheek celebration of youth, with a playful, energetic tempo and a positive message about the joys of living in the moment. The B-52's successfully capture the essence of youth with their catchy hooks, driving rhythms, and quirky lyrics, making it an iconic song of the 80s.
