Legal Tender
The B-52's Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're in the basement, learning to print
All of it's hot!
10, 20, 30 million ready to be spent
We're stackin' 'em against the wall
Those gangster presidents
Livin' simple and trying to get by
But honey, prices have shot through the sky
So I fixed up the basement with
What I was a-workin' with
Stocked it full of jelly jars
And heavy equipment
We're in the basement...
10, 20, 30 million dollars
Ready to be spent

Walk into the bank, try to pass that trash
Teller sees and says

Overall Meaning

"Uh-huh, robbery!"
The lyrics to "Legal Tender" by The B-52's paint a picture of a group of individuals in the basement, working tirelessly to produce counterfeit money. The opening lines suggest that they are learning to print money and that their operation is in high demand as they have millions of fake dollars to spend right away. The mention of "gangster presidents" could be interpreted as a reference to corrupt government officials who are profiting off of their power. The lyrics mention living simply and trying to get by, potentially implying that this counterfeiting operation is a way for them to help themselves financially in a world where prices have skyrocketed.

The second half of the song details how the basement is equipped with everything they need to produce the fake money. The mention of jelly jars could be a reference to the inks and dyes needed to print the fake money as well as other tools and equipment that they have amassed. The chorus repeats that they have millions of dollars ready to be spent, and they are eager to pass off their fake money as real. However, as the lyrics continue, they encounter obstacles when they try to deposit their fake money at a bank. The teller immediately recognizes that it is fake and identifies them as robbers.

Overall, "Legal Tender" can be interpreted as a commentary on the temptation to take shortcuts and commit crimes in order to achieve financial success in a world with skyrocketing costs of living. The song's upbeat tempo and catchy chorus mask the dark themes present in the lyrics.

This is the song that introduced me to the B-52s. I was in Brazil in 1985 meeting the family of my future wife and this song was getting heavy radio play there. I taped the song off the radio and must have played it 500 times . I sill love this song, the B-52s and my Brazilian wife I have been married to for 32 years. When I hear this song it reminds me of my fist trip tp Brazil and my introduction to the B-52s. It will always be special to me. Eu Adoro B-52s

This song was such a big hit in Brazil that it was exclusively add to the Brazilian edition of the 1998 compilation "Time Capsule". I have the Japanese edition that comes with a DVD but it's a bummer it doesn't have "Legal Tender".
