The name comes from the bouffant wigs that are part of the band's distinctive look, worn by singers Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson. Along with Wilson and Pierson, fellow vocalist Fred Schneider, drummer (and later guitarist) Keith Strickland, and guitarist Ricky Wilson (Cindy's older brother) formed the band after a drunken night at a Chinese restaurant. They shared a passion for mixing and matching older styles with a partying, good-time public image, which set them apart from many staid 70s contemporaries.
Their sound is particularly marked by the vocals of Wilson and Pierson, with Kate singing in a slightly deeper voice, along with the generally monotone or spoken-word vocals of Schneider. Aside from their vocals, the band also had a unique New Wave sound that was a combination of 50s and 60s dance music and surf rock, and the unusual guitar-string tunings utilized by Ricky Wilson. Although a clear part of said movement, their music was more experimental than most new wave groups, indulging in all manner of odd vocal and synthesizer effects. The B-52's created a quirky dance vibe that became very popular and their tours have been successful for decades.

Quiche Lorraine
The B-52's Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's a dreary downtown day
But
At the end of my forty-foot leash
Is my little friend
Quiche
Quiche La Poodle
Is her name
Quiche
Quiche Lorraine
Quiche, Quiche Lorraine
Quiche, Quiche Lorraine
Everyday I take her out, yeah
She runs around and she shouts out and barks, yeah
'Cause she's a good doggie
She's a sweet, sweet, sweet puppy
And I know she'll stick by me, yeah
Oh no, here comes a Great Dane (Quiche, Quiche Lorraine)
Drivin' down the lane (Quiche, Quiche Lorraine)
Quiche, Quiche, Quiche come back here (Quiche, Quiche Lorraine)
Don't leave me (Quiche, Quiche Lorraine)
I'll go insane (Quiche, Quiche Lorraine)
I'll go insane (Quiche, Quiche Lorraine)
How do you like that?
Has anybody seen
A dog dyed dark green?
About two inches tall
With a strawberry blonde fall
Sunglasses and a bonnet
And designer jeans with appliques on it?
The dog that brought me so much joy
Left me wallowing in pain
Quiche Lorraine
I'll show her!
Do you see the key in my hand?
I'm gonna throw it in the lake
Yea, you've been so rotten to me
You take the cake
I'm just gonna lock the door to your kennel
And just you try and come back to me
Yeah, you'll see (Quiche, Quiche Lorraine)
You mangy mutt (Quiche, Quiche Lorraine)
(Quiche Quiche Lorraine) I'm talking about Quiche!
Quiche Lorraine
The B-52's' song "Quiche Lorraine" starts off with lyrics that describe the gloomy atmosphere of a dreary downtown day. However, the singer is not alone as they are accompanied by their little friend, Quiche, a poodle whose full name is Quiche La Poodle. The song is about spending time with Quiche and having a good time even when the weather and the environment around them is not favorable. Quiche is a sweet, good doggie who makes the singer feel better just by being around her. The song then takes an unexpected turn as the singer sings about encountering a Great Dane who seems to threaten their happiness. However, the song ends on a humorous note as the singer searches for a dog they describe as "dyed dark green" with a strawberry blonde fall, sunglasses, designer jeans, and appliques. The singer then decides to punish Quiche by throwing the key to her kennel in the lake, but not before calling her a "mangy mutt."
"Quiche Lorraine" is a song that celebrates the joys of having a loyal pet and the bond that can be formed between a dog and a human companion. The singer's relationship with Quiche is portrayed as one that brings joy and happiness into their life, even when the world around them seems dark and dull. Through the lyrics, it is easy to see how pets can bring real value to the lives of their owners.
