Their music has featured on numerous film and TV soundtracks. The song "Dry the Rain" from their 1997 debut EP, Champion Versions, later to be released on the 3 EP's album, was possibly their most popular track and was famously featured in the John Cusack film, High Fidelity. The song "Smiling" from the self titled album "The Beta Band" is the background music to the UK's Soccer AM, Cross-Bar challenge. "Needles in My Eyes" was featured on a fourth season episode of House MD.
Well known fans include John Cusack, Mani, from Primal Scream and Stone Roses and Noel Gallagher.
Their live performances were legendary, often ending with the whole band playing percussion. Their dancing and energy got the whole audience moving, often in the same style as their idols on stage. Their "Best of" CD contains a CD of them playing live at the Shepherds Bush Empire in one of their final gigs and manages to capture some of this energy. It has been suggested, sometimes by the band themselves, that they were better live than recorded.
Steve has now released an album under his own name after his post-Beta Band projects Black Affair and King Biscuit Time, John, Robin and Gordon Anderson aka Lone Pigeon have formed The Aliens (www.myspace.com/thealiens1) and Rich is The General & Duchess Collins.

The Beta Band Lyrics

With the friend I had before
Grabbing at straws
So the holes don't slow me down
Coming up next
The lizard and the text
Showing me the ropes
Don't be giving up your hopes
With the underwater steam
[Push/Fish] on the side
He's a looking for a dream
She's The One for me
She's The One for me
She's The One for me
She's The One for me
(She's The One for me x repeated)
Falling through the floor
With the friend I had before
Grabbing at straws
So the holes don't slow me down
Coming up next
The lizard and the text
Showing me the ropes
Don't be giving up your hopes
Trickle downstream
With the underwater steam
[Push/Fish] on the side
He's a looking for a dream
Give up the try
For the everlasting life
Never grew upside
So I keep it all inside
Fat girl ticklelish
Crazy Miss Stimulus
Falling on your face with your stupid line brace
Saying, Pop goes the weasel as he paints another easel
Grab a piece of pie, she's your chicken in your eye
Push out the boat 'fore the river runs dry
Drinking in the watersun, pucking on the egg fry
With my super line
With my super line
I never threw before so I never found the reason
Walk, fall, doesnt stall, blowing in the breezin'
Holding on the side, just a painting for the season
Walk, fall, doesnt stall, blowing in the breezin'
She's the one for me [repeated]
[ repeats the whole thing from the beginning ]
The Beta Band's "She's The One" is a psychedelic trip through disjointed images and patterns. The lyrics describe a journey through different levels of consciousness, where the singer is "falling through the floor" with a friend and trying to grab at straws to prevent being slowed down by holes. The lizard and the text represent something to be learned or discovered, while the underwater steam and fish are a metaphor for the current of life. The singer is looking for a dream and has hopes not to give up on his journey.
The chorus repeats several times throughout the song, and the singer declares that "she's the one for me." However, the identity of the woman is never revealed, and it is unclear whether she represents a person or something else entirely.
The song's structure mirrors its theme, with disconnected lines and images flowing together to create a dreamlike state. The lyrics are open to interpretation, and the listener is encouraged to interpret them as they see fit.
