Jailhouse Rock
The Blues Blothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Warden threw a party in the county jail
Prisonband was there and they began to wail
The joint was jumping and the place began to swing
You should have heard those knocked out jailbirds sing

Let's rock, everybody, let's rock
Everybody on the whole cell block
They was dancing to the jailhouse rock

Spider Murphy played the tenor saxophone
Little Joe was blowin' on the slide trombone
The drummer boy from Illinois went crash boom bang
The whole rhythm section was the purple gang

Let's rock, everybody, let's rock
Everybody on the whole cell block
They was dancing to the jailhouse rock

Well, number 47 said to number 3
You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see
I sure'll be delighted with your company
Come on and do the jailhouse rock with me

Let's rock, everybody let's rock
Everybody on the whole cell block
They were dancing to the jailhouse rock
Let's rock

Sad Sack sittin' on a block of stone
Way over in the corner weepin' all alone
The warden said, "Hey buddy, don't you be no square
Can't find a partner, use a wooden chair"

Let's rock, everybody let's rock
Everybody on the whole cell block
They was dancing to the jailhouse rock

They were dancing to the jailhouse rock
They was dancing to the jailhouse rock
They was dancing to the jailhouse rock

They was dancing to the jailhouse rock
Everybody on the whole cell block
They was dancing to the jailhouse rock

They was dancing to, dancing to, dancing to, dancing to
Dancing to the jailhouse rock
Oh, they was dancing, dancing, dancing, dancing

Dancing to the jailhouse rock
Everybody on the whole cell block
They was dancing to the jailhouse rock

Jailhouse rock, they was dancin' to the jailhouse rock
They was dancin' to the jailhouse rock
They was dancin' to the jailhouse rock

Everybody on the whole cell block
They was dancing to the jailhouse rock

Overall Meaning

The Blues Brothers’ song “Jailhouse Rock” was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and was originally made famous by Elvis Presley in the movie of the same name. The song starts with the introduction of a party thrown by the warden in the county jail where the prison band was present and started to play music. The prisoners begin to dance and jump around to the music which is described by the singer as the “jailhouse rock”. The song has a fast tempo and is full of excitement and energy as the prisoners let loose and enjoy themselves.

The lyrics make use of several interesting characters such as Spider Murphy, Little Joe, and the drummer boy from Illinois who make up the rhythm section of the band. The prisoners, known as jailbirds, are portrayed as lively and vibrant, with one prisoner expressing his interest in another by saying “You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see”. The song also takes a humorous turn when the warden offers a wooden chair to a prisoner who can't find a partner to dance with.

The lyrics in the song “Jailhouse Rock” express the theme of joyfulness and a sense of freedom despite being in jail. The prisoners find a way to escape their mundane routine and find happiness through dancing, socializing, and generally having a good time. The song, therefore, stands as an anthem for people who have been locked up and are yearning for some form of emotional release.
