HISTORY
Two brothers (James and Harry Roden) grew up playing guitar together in Canberra -Australia's planned capital - listening to anything with melody and punch: The Clash, The Who, The Jam, The Sunnyboys, The Kinks, The Stems, The Huxton Creepers, Otis Redding, The Byrds, Motown, soul, punk, pop. After moving to and playing in bands in Sydney (James in the John Reed Club and Harry in Hoolahan) they finally started a band together, asked Danny Allen (Youth Group and The Drums) to play guitar & keyboards and Shane Melder (Sidewinder) to play drums.
Together they recorded with Michael Carpenter at Love Hz Studios and called it "Escape From Tomorrow Today" and were released on Ivy League Records in Australia and on Bitterweet Records in Spain. It was Triple J's, 4ZZZ's and 3PBS's Album of the Week. They toured like crazy. Shane left the band and so Kit Warhurst (Rocket Science) stepped in on drums for a 2007 tour of Spain and the band brought Bruno Brayovic (Peabody) on the road 'cause Danny couldn't do all the gigs. Complicated?! Yes. Fun? Definitely.....
Then The City Lights tried being a rock collective for a while with all their new members. This meant members were free to come and go but the band never died. The second album featured the Roden brothers this time joined by Graeme Trewin (ex-Peabody) on drums, Bruno Brayovic (Peabody) on guitar, Danny Allen (Youth Group and The Drums) on guitar and Kit Warhurst (Rocket Science) on drums as well as guests on trumpets, keys and vocals. "El Sol" was recorded at Big Jesus Burger Studios, Surry Hills, Sydney by David ‘Trumpy’ Trumpmanis. It was a musical tribute to their time in Spain and received 4 star reviews.
The City Lights then toured again like crazy and finished a January 2009 tour of Spain as a four piece featuring James, Harry, Bruno and Graeme.
NEW ALBUM: I JUST GOT TO BELIEVE out 14th SEPTEMBER 2012 THROUGH MGM
That line-up of James, Harry, Graeme and Bruno spent 4 days recording in July 2010 with Tim Kevin recording in Waverton as the beginnings of album no.3. It wasn't up to scratch so Harry, James and Graeme (Bruno was and is living overseas) started the whole album again in 2011 (keeping just one song from the first sessions) with Tim again recording. This time it was recorded at Jim Moginie's (Midnight Oil) Oceanic Studio on the Northern Beaches and it all made sense. The album was mixed by Tim at Grey Nurse Studio in Marrickville and finally mastered by Don Bartley in May 2012.
The new album is called "I Just Got To Believe" and is out 14th September 2012. It is called "I Just Got To Believe" for the obvious reason - to finish this third album has taken all their energy and belief that doing something the band loves so much - playing rock together - is difficult but ultimately worth it.

Never Let You Go
The City Lights Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She's sneaky and smoked out
And it's starting to show
I never let you go [x3]
I never let you turn around, our back on each other
That's a good idea, break a promise to your mother
You say that I’ve changed
Well maybe I did
But even if I changed
What's wrong with it
I never let you go [x3]
I never let you turn around, our back on each other
That's a good idea, break a promise to your mother
Turn around your back on each other
And all our friends are gone and gone
And all the time moves on and on
And all I know is it's wrong, it's wrong
And all I know is it's wrong, it's wrong, it's wrong
If there's a reason, it's lost on me
Maybe we’ll be friends, I guess we'll see
I never let you go [x3]
I never let you turn around, our back on each other
It's a good idea, break a promise to your mother
Turn around your back on each other
Good idea, break a promise to your mother
Turn around your back on each other
What a good idea, break a promise to your mother
Turn around your back on each other
What a good idea...
I remember the stupid things, the mood rings, the bracelets and the beads
Nickels and dimes, yours and mine, did you cash in all your dreams
You don't dream for me, no
You don't dream for me, no
But I still feel you pulse like sonar from the days in the waves
That girl is like a sunburn
I would like to save
The girl is like a sunburn
I would like to save
She's like a sunburn
The City Lights' song "Never Let You Go" speaks about a strained relationship that is reaching its end. The singer realizes that it's time to let go and start anew. The phrase "there's every good reason for letting you go" emphasizes this realization that the relationship is not healthy and it's time for both parties to move on. In the first verse, the singer highlights how their partner's behavior makes it clear that it's time to let them go. The use of the word "sneaky" alludes to the partner's deceitful nature, making the singer realize that it's time to let go.
In the second verse, the singer emphasizes the importance of staying true to each other despite the changes that may arise between them. The idea of breaking a promise to one's mother emphasizes the understanding that it's not a good idea to turn your back on someone you love, no matter the circumstance. The chorus emphasizes the singer's commitment to not letting go of the other person.
The song's bridge talks about the memories that the singer shares with their partner. The mention of "mood rings, the bracelets and the beads" highlights the nostalgia of the times they have shared together. The repetition of the phrase "turn around your back on each other" in the chorus emphasizes the importance of keeping promises and staying true to each other.
