@bertyboo The way they work you and treat you isn't worth the pay. They expect you to work like a high functioning machine from day 1. During the high river 2013 flood people wanted to go home and check on their families and houses because many were underwater but were told they would be fired if they left. There was also a huge number of covid cases outbreak in the high river location because of the lack of standards and cargill had to face multiple lawsuits.

This is for the cameras, I’ve worked in 2 meat factories in Australia and it was awful. 10-12hr days 6 days a week, horrible bosses who don’t care about your health or safety one single bit, and you’ll get fired on the spot if you’re ‘slow’.

Fredo Santana for me they did, for me it’s 4:50-2pm and it’s fucking hard(I’m new and not yet adjusted standing for hours and wearing heavy boots that hurt my ankles) I mostly stack boxes and package meat.

I used to work in the meat processing industry, though the more heavily processed side. I started the first 4 months on a 8:00 pm - 4:30 am shift. Not fun. then it was 4:30 am - 12:30 (our team didn't take a lunch break, just two 15 min) I got later put on easy mode 6:00 am - 2:30 pm

thats a great video yes thats still old fashion way and certificates weren't my day ys u have to be fast and keep up all day long as line keeps moving and everyone has there cuts to do, my dad was a beef and mutton, veal boner 35 yrs one thing u hand has to adjust the knife and it will hurt heaps takes a lot of time, also I was a labour in a mutton veal boning room was piece work this days we talking 18 yrs back then knife hand then I started boning me I really like this work kept me fit and money was super and hours were even better but now certificates to me rubbish waste of time

The cattle you saw being processed were old dairy cows that have been on a grass fed diet for years. There is a natural form of vitamin A in grass called beta-carotene and this is what causes the fat to turn yellow.

@M S Grass fed meat from slow maturing beef breeds does smell and taste better yes but the animals in this video were older dairy cows so the meat would be tough unless minced or further processed. You should only encounter meat from these animals in pies burgers and similar processed products.

Working on the kill floor is harder, the hide on some of the grain fed and bulls is over 1cm thick, and you will get flogged day in day out, the industry was good in the 70s and 80s pay wise when we had the tally system but the last 20 years has seen us go to hourly pay and the companies is all about faster production for less pay, ive got 45 years in industry and will be glad to see the arse end of it..

I hear ya mate! It was total shit, I was doing it at the works about the same time as you too must've been in 1998... In 1999 went and worked at Pak'nSave butchery instead as the butchery assistant and cleaner. Way better than the works in comparison, they wanted me to do butchery apprenticeship at Pak'nSave but I wasn't too interested....but similar to you, thrown on the bottom of the rung doing all the dirty and extremely heavy and horrid jobs no one else wanted to do - both at the works AND at Pak'nSave. Def treated like shit and my body just was buggered and ached most nights like had the flu. Def not worth it for the minimum wage... Glad I quit the industry

@Semisonic99 I was at greenlea round 2002 so similar time period. Worked 15 hours and only got paid for 12 as the last 3 was cleaning the slaughter floor and didn’t count as work apparently. No Union at the time so they easily got away with it and a mate got burnt with the super hot water as no training at all was provided for use of equipment which just they told him to harden up and put a plaster on. Terrible industry to work in and I’m glad I only lasted a very short time.

the people adds here so true it wasn't like this old days most boners broke them down and had slicers do the rest but in mutton veal the boners break all down and bone out the back leg and front leg be done by a slicer so those days were so hard and super fast I use to pack and use a knife my dad and his mate a s slicer my dad was one of a super fast boner to work with and every hour they got 5 min break so we had to catch up as was tally work then class as piece work hehe but labouring gosh was fast but u get use to doing it, what I see now isn't like this anymore seem so much easier

Better than customer service! I used to work at the other end of this supply chain at MLCF where we would receive this kind of product and make our smoked beef, roast beef, sausages, hams, all that kind of stuff. I worked in our Defrost dept, and it was a darn good job. Started at $10/hour, and finished at ~ $19, in 3 years! Of course, it didn't last as I was laid off due to the company loosing our smoked turkey contract with Safeway or something like that.
