Literally the first action movie I ever got to see. My mom and dad rented it when we got our first VCR in 1984. I'll never forget seeing the t800 rise out of the flames at the end and thinking it was the coolest thing to ever grace my four year old eyes.

@Juan Ruiz You might be thinking of Terminator Rampage, because yeah that one was an fps by Bethesda and it kinda sucked. But Future Shock and Skynet were also developed by Bethesda (I think the last two Terminator games they made) but were pretty great games from that era.

@Juan Ruiz Based fellow Quake/Retro FPS fan. Quake 1 is my 2nd favorite game of all time.
Also I love Quake 2 but I'd argue it was much more complex in terms of the gameplay. 1 was alot more atmospheric though despite 2 being so too in its own way. And Quake 1 by far had a better movement system. Bunny hopping at lightning fast speeds especially in multiplayer NEVER gets old. Hexen 2's is even better if you've played that.
Since you like old FPS games and Terminator, I'd totally recommend Terminator Future Shock/Skynet in case you've never played those. Awesome games from the mid 90s.

I don't think anyone working on the Terminator franchise currently understands how much the score by Brad Fiedel brought to these movies. They are fools not to use him or at the very least his electronically operatic themes and style. I know he retired but I read an interview where he said he wasn't even asked about Dark Fate even though he might've entertained the thought if Cameron was involved. Watch any movie post-T2 with this playing in the background and I can assure you they will kick 200% more ass.

Genesis and Dark Fate are total garbage movies anyway. Brad Fiedel can consider himself lucky not being ask. Best sequels are still Terminator 2, 3 and Salvation.

It's a blessing they haven't insulted him as much. Arnie and Linda put 300% out of 100% in the films and make them watchable but there's only one The Terminator. And this epic score is it distilled into sound. I believe 99% of the people miss the true, tragic nature of this story. This is a love story first and most. This man traveled through time when it wasn't a thing yet. It's a bastardized concept now. He did it when there wouldn't ever be another chance, ever. When the technology was exponentially beyond any human capability to understand, maybe ever. He did it for the same reason good people have done nearly impossible things, if not impossible things, from times forgotten. This is a remember message. Too bad we forget. There's not a single flaw in this movie. The love put into it still can be seen in EVERY Arnie's performance of this character. I believe it's his I love you humanity delivery. He should've be nominated in 1984 and maybe every time he performed the character.
What's amazing is I don't buy any of the sequences at all but he's a different cyborg every time and if machines ever become as heartily they'll become the true continuation of the best in our species. I don't think the impact this film has has anything to do with the usual suspects.
I think deep down we know that our time as a biological entity is coming to an end. For good.

Precisely. Think of the movie “greats.” Apollo 13, Terminator, T2, The Godfather, Indiana Jones, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Jurassic Park and more recently, The Planet of the Apes franchise. Can you imagine any of these without the score??? I wager that they wouldn’t even be remembered! The score is absolutely vital in moving a film story forward. I don’t think producers know this. Or worse, they don’t give a goddamn.

I don't know if you mean the soundtrack or the score. This is the score. Scores are typically orchestrated music that is heard throughout the majority of a film. Soundtracks are recordings of estaished recording artists that may or may not appear at points in a film almost as cameos if you will. As an example the soundtrack to The Terminator contains a lot of songs by Trianglyz which is the music you hear in the beginning Technoir shootout. This the score and contains the orchestral music.

I will always see this film as better than T2 (which I still love and enjoy), because it presents something darker and more emotional than two robots shoving each other through walls. The sheer desperation of Sarah and Reese ("Can you stop it?" "I don't know. With these weapons...I don't know") are highlighted throughout the soundtrack, and although bleak, the movie comes across to me as more meaningful than an action blockbuster. I think my favorite piece is the one at 16:00, which plays during Reese's first future flashback. That scene makes fighting the Machines look way dirtier and tougher than in the opening scene of T2, and it's all the better for it.

@Bryce Tharp Seems logically inconsistent though, if Reese was John's father how did young Reese see John rise to become the leader while he was growing up before being sent back in time. Such a paradox, just adds to the mystery.

There are some unique features to this soundtrack that T2 didn't accomplish.. some eerie and menacing feel to it yet melodic in a strange way.. I tell you them Synths I truly miss..

For me, the Tech-Noir scene is still one of the most thrilling scenes put on modern screen. Will never forget seeing it as a kid. I still get a lump in my throat, even knowing that Reese will save her. That absolute look on dread when Sarah sees the T-800 about to clip her... Chills...

Brilliant soundtrack. Main theme is iconic and I've always had a soft spot for 'Conversation By The Window - Love Scene', adds a brief oasis of humanity amidst the oppressive machine inspired themes without sounding out of place. Classic all round soundtrack!

I would love to have been in a cinema in the 80s during the initial release of this film, to see the reaction of the audience when the Terminator was stripped down to the pure robotic skeleton near the end. Must have been such a brilliant moment for audiences. Still great now.

I saw it some years later during a rerun on a small town theater and it was quite an experience. Zoomers probably would just shrug at the real machine if they saw one. Amazing what a little time did to time itself. Still quality itself is still like steel. This film doesn't age; we do.

Such brilliant work. Everything is dark, gritty and absolutely terrifying. But then you have Sara’s music that’s always accompanied by the piano, to show some sweet innocence. Then at a crucial point in the movie, you have a coming together of pain, suffering and horror, with that innocence, and the terminator theme is done by piano with “conversion by the window.” Just fantastic.

Converging. There's a path there from the start. There's a destiny. A modern epic. The technothriller aspects serve a noble purpose like all else. This is a testament for hope. If we ever make it collectively it's solely for the soul shown in great cinema. The motivators behind a film this good aren't merely material but spiritual, in a philosophical sense. i can't hear the music of the Police Station without hearing the crackling of fire and the RA-TA-TA-TA-TA-TA-TA of automatic fire and the sound of casings hitting the ground.

That whole sequence is so engrained in my mind. Still one of the most shocking sequences i've ever personally seen on film short of the Chestburster from Alien.

This is a very valid point. A few scores back then in the mid eighties when the original scores begun to be popular, had the actual sound track, just as in the movie, due to the amalgamation being the soundsphere intended as is. In The Silence of the Lambs one may appreciate that by comparing the results. In fact, in The Fly the same happens. In the end a score shouldn't be separated from the movie it is made for at the risk of misapprehension. In my lay opinion.

It's both ominous and perfectly unique in a way this will always be Terminator related. I mean there are many soundtracks made by certain composers who seemingly have an unique sound for a movie yet it is interchangeable for so many other movies.

One of those movies upon first watching you just knew it was going to be a classic.I actually prefer T1 over T2, its dark, gritty action, the synthesizer score.

The 2nd films soundtrack is iconic and amazing. But for different reasons to this film's.
The synth and heavy use of machine noises and metallic strikes is so unlike any other films score. And the overwhelming feeling of dread and hopelessness in most tracks really drives home the world reese comes from. The fact the Resistance game uses a soundtrack which is obviously based on this one is no coincidence...notice how that game is the only thing since T2 that 99% of the of the fans can agree is good?

I used to think that T2 was always better but after rewatching 1 after so long it's like damn its just as good. The whole world it creates by its story telling of how the future is and the atmosphere that it creates, there's no other movie like it. Seems like everyone after just had to follow the same formula in some way, even with the comics. When someone asked me what it's about I geeked my own self up just talking about the concept.

Those were good days. Not to be insincere, carry those times with you by the music you listen to and maybe the games you play. I still wear retro Asics Tigers for example - (the red white and blue ones) to this day. And somebody always points them out when that meant something and I get to hear how they were a Nike (red swoosh) dude or Gal (blue swoosh). The 80s live on by the people who carry it with them. So pass it on. The world needs it. :)

Listening to this daily at work is like watching the movie in my head. This, T2 and even Salvation has a decent soundtrack. Brad Fiedel and Danny Elfman know how to write movie scores.

I know right? This movie showed what the T-101 was REALLY made for. Now, the second is great, no doubt, but it still didn't had the dark atmosphere the original had.

I recently watched this movie for the first time (Thanks to my brother), and GODDAMN THIS MOVIE IS FUCKING AWESOME, the story, the acting, the characters, and this amazing score. Easily one of the best movies of the early 80's. This movie is a masterpiece.

Although I love T2, the original Terminator will ALWAYS be my favorite due to how unique it was. Being a 1980s action/horror sci-fi with such epic music, and having a still-prime Arnold Schwarzenegger as a VILLAIN (I believe ONLY movie that done it), that film from 1984 is legendary!

The Arm and Eye Surgery is So terrifying and chilling!! Love it!! Makes Friday The 13th and Halloween Theme sound like cartoon music. Brad Fiedel did such an awesome job!! Too bad he never composed The rest of the Franchise after T2. Then again i don't blame him because the rest sucked!!

I'll never forget the goosebumps everytime the lights went down in the theater and this music started playing (I saw this movie many times when it was still in the theater). The era ('80s) was captured perfectly in this movie and soundtrack. After it stopped playing at the theater, my brother and I rented the absolute CRAP out of it after it came out on VHS. Lines memorized? Yep. Every. Word. Ahh, the good ol' days, that's for sure.

I watched this as a young kid on video and was scared for a long time not understanding the movie but only thinking about how evil the Terminator was. Watching it again many years later as an adult, it still brought back memories of the fear I had of the Terminator, but this time could appreciate it as a viewer, and also after seeing Terminator 2. I can’t imagine what watching T1 must have been like to see for the first time in a cinema without knowing anything about the movie back in 1984. I hated horror but T1 was something beyond anything else at the time that scared the shit out of me. The movie hit all the senses. Best Terminator ever

This and Terminator 2 were one the first two movies my parents let me watch that were R-rated. That was over half a lifetime ago.

Now, I made the mistake of watching T2 first XD But you know what? It's THIS version of The Terminator theme that stuck with me, not the one in T2. This title theme has NEVER failed to send chills down my spine. You hear that, and you just KNOW this is going to be a dark, serious, tragic movie. And holy crap it delivered.

I love both movies so much. But I gotta give the edge to the original. The second was definitely a more polished, better acted, and action-packed sequel. But this movie, man, it sucks you in with its characters and story. It's the story of a broken, war-torn man traveling across time to protect the woman he admires and falls in love with. Just to see something that massive in scope done so well... like I said, I love the sequel also, but there's NOTHING in it that compares to that simple, and insanely well executed idea.

@just some guy Same exact thing happened to me except I was 5 years old, why was it so fascinating for us at such a young age? I think its because there simply hasnt been anything done like it again. And I find myself obsessing over it as I get older, I dont even watch T2, just pure amazement at everything this film did, music, acting, story writing, effects, directing, a complete masterpiece.

I was 9 when Terminator was released. You may remember the old movie network from the 80's. My dad had Terminator on an unmarked VHS - presumably so I wouldn't find and watch - that I found by accident.

Ohhhhh baby... I watched the Terminator EVERYDAY after school for almost 2 years before I got caught. I was totally obsessed with the entire concept. Same thing with the SAW films lol... seen them each like 100 times. The violence is cool sure, but it's actually the story that intrigues me.

This is one of the most beautiful things said about a movie ever. Funny hiw simple a truth it is. Wish I had said it myself about every great cinematic piece I have seen. I share the sentiment. Peter Levenda said something to the tune of movies being the closest thing to a truly spiritual experience most of have ever have. I agree.
There's a profound nobility in Hollywood. Don't be fooled by the misdirections. The soulfulness so many magnificent films display may be the difference between extinction and extraordinary. Movies really are forever.

This movie was on the same VHS tape as The Never-ending Story when I was a kid. I'd ask to watch it, The Never-ending Story, and always sneak in the tanker truck chase scene before it. Finally my parents gave up and let me watch the full movie. That was circa 1985ish. 2018 still my favorite movie of all time. I can close my eyes and play the movie in my head to this soundtrack and never look at a television.

It's interesting how closely the music sounds like the sound effects in the movie. Fiedel had a real gift for making the music have relevance to EVERYTHING in the frame. It makes the music feel alive, and inseparable from the film. The electric low pitched hum when the terminator arrives, sounds like a powered on machine, rather than music In the garage chase, the screeching sound is almost indistinguishable from the tires screeching in the movie. And the truck/bike chase has sounds in the music the I didn't know were part of the score, I just though it was the sound of the texture in the pavement at high speed, like some bridges sound when you drive across them. The music is a sound effect of it's own, and adds weight to the actions, rather than just being background noise. This is really good stuff.

I purchased this back in June 1994 just before my 22nd Birthday and just before my Grandfather died, one of the most amazing and wise men I ever knew. I think of him when I listen to this.

It’s still my first ‘grown up’ film I feel I watched – horrors like the Universal and Hammer one’s didn’t feel like adult films but The Terminator did. I loved it and T2 so much.
