Foolish little girl
The Cookies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You broke his heart and made him cry,
And he's been blue since then.
Now he's found somebody new,
And you want him back again.

Foolish Little Girl, fickle little girl.
You didn't want him when he wanted you.
He's found another love, It's her he's dreaming of
And there's not a single thing that you can do.

But I love him.
No you don't it's just your pride that's hurt.
I still love him.
If you got him back again,
You'd go right out and do him dirt.

Foolish Little Girl, fickle little girl.
You didn't want him when he wanted you.
He's found another love, It's her he's dreaming of
And there's not a single thing that you can do.
Forget him 'cause he don't belong to you.

Foolish Little Girl, fickle little girl.
You didn't want him when he wanted you.
He's found another love, It's her he's dreaming of
And there's not a single thing that you can do.

But I love him.
It's to late to have a change of heart.
I still love him.
Tomorrow is his wedding day,
And you'll keep quiet if you're smart.

Foolish Little Girl, fickle little girl.
You didn't want him when he wanted you.
He's found another love, It's her he's dreaming of
And there's not a single thing that you can do.
Forget him 'cause he don't belong to you.

Forget him 'cause he don't belong to you.
Forget him 'cause he don't belong to you.

Overall Meaning

The Cookies' song Foolish Little Girl tells the story of a woman who breaks up with her partner and later regrets it when he moves on with someone else. The woman is now trying to win him back, but he has found someone new and is happy. Despite her pleas, he refuses to come back to her, and she realizes that she made a mistake.

The song is a cautionary tale about the danger of taking people for granted and not appreciating them until they're gone. It highlights the importance of valuing the people in our lives while we have them because once they're gone, there's no going back. The woman's pride has been hurt by the fact that her ex-boyfriend has moved on with someone else, and she can't accept that she made a mistake by letting him go. She still believes that she loves him, but he has moved on, and there's nothing she can do about it.

I take that back. I like this version too! It' s comparable to The Shirelle version.

@Rowland108

Earl Jean sings the solo bits

@Kekuahiwi

sure the Shirelles had the head, but if you listen closely you'll find the exact same backing track for both versions. Not just the arrangement with different musicians, the same track. But the cookies were a hot group with a bunch of good songs that got a lot of radio play. The Beatles even covered one of them, Chains.
