Too Hurt To Cry Too Much In Love To Say Goodbye
The Darnells Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It hurt me so bad
To see you cross the floor
Kissing her

You didn't see me
But I saw you and
It hurt me so
It hurt me so bad
When I tried to cry
To ease my hurt inside
But I tried in vain
'Cause the tears never came

I'm too hurt to cry
And too much in love to say goodbye

I tried telling myself
That you loved me and no one else
But each time I look across the floor
I'm just not sure

When I saw you hold her tight
With all my mind I tried to cry
To ease this hurt
This hurt inside

But I'm too hurt to cry
And too much in love to say goodbye

Although you hurt me so
I love you too much to let you go
And when you take me home
You'll never know
I saw you kissing her

I'll go on like nothing has happened instead
Some things are better unsaid
But if could cry
I wouldn't feel so sad

But I'm too hurt to cry
And too much in love to say goodbye
But I'm too hurt to cry
And too much in love to say goodbye
Say goodbye
Say goodbye

Say goodbye
Say goodbye

Overall Meaning

The Darnells' song Too Hurt To Cry is a classic tale of heartbreak and betrayal. In soulful and melancholic lyrics, the singer tells the story of a painful experience she had when she witnessed the person she loves kissing someone else on the dance floor. Though the person didn't see her, she saw them, and the experience hurt her deeply. She tries to cry to ease the pain but can't seem to do so, as the tears never came. She's too hurt to cry, but she's also too much in love to say goodbye. Even trying to tell herself that the person loves her alone doesn't make her feel any better. When she sees the person with the other woman, she tries to cry to ease the hurt, but she can't. She must keep quiet and ignore what happened, though its effects linger on.

These lyrics evoke a sense of deep pain and sadness that cut to the bone. The singer's love is pure, but it seems not to be reciprocated. The song's mood is somber and melancholic, with a slow and steady beat and soulful vocals that bring out the emotions in the lyrics brilliantly. The lyrics show that sometimes, love can hurt so much that it becomes overwhelming, and even the act of crying cannot provide relief. The singer seems to be holding on to her love, even though it's not being returned, indicating that sometimes the heart wants what it wants, even if it's not the best for us.

THIS is a fantastic song!!!!  Best from the Marvelettes, by far!!!

The lead vocals were dual, Gladys Horton and Wanda Rogers....

And since Motown didn't consider the Andantes a performing group...and they did the backgrounds, the song was only a studio recording...never got performed live.  I guess it got next to no promotion.  They called this "new" group, the Darnells.

no wanda, sorry. its gladys all the way.

After The Crystals 'Da Doo Ron Ron' became a worldwide smash, it seemed every producer in Creation with a girl group attempted to get a sound-alike hit. Most failed. Reportedly, the Supremes' similarly-named 'Run Run Run' was laid down a month after the Crystals hit, but was kept in the can till Jan 1964. While a tremendous record, it also barely dented the charts. At least here, 'Too Late To Cry...' seems to take its queue from 'Then He Kissed Me". It's terrific in its own right, and like too many good records, it probably wasn't strongly promoted by Berry Gordy, and it languished as a result.

One of the best to come out of Motown.

Love this song. It's probably my favourite Marvelettes song. Just don't get why Motown released it under the fake group name though?!

The castenets were a staple of early Spector records.

Why?  Easy: it's really a hybrid recording.  Take the lead singer of The Marvelettes (Gladys Horton) and add Motown's premier backing vocal trio The Andantes, and the result: The Darnells!

INDEED SIR, YOU GOT THAT RIGHT !

It sounds too much like the Crystals "Da Doo Ron Ron". I wish they would have recorded the song without all that wall of sound. Sometimes too much wall of sound made everything sound too muddled instead of crisp and clear. I'm glad they included this song in the Marvelettes Forever the complete Motown albums Vol. 1 cd box set.
