I'm Your Man
The Denims Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Like the brutal morning sun
It dawns on me, what have I done?
Saying sorry ain't as good as saying why
But it buys me a little more time

Lost in the moment for the second time
Each fucking doubt I make, unleash a cry
I'm just pathetic, that's the reason why
In desperation, all that you can do is ask me why

'Cause I'm a man, woman
Don't always think before I do
'Cause I'm a man, woman
That's the only answer I've got for you
'Cause I'm a man, woman
Not often proud of what I choose
I'm a human, woman
A greater force I answer to

Once again, as it takes a hold
I am aware I'm not in control
You see, I have a conscience and it's never fooled
But it's prone to be overruled
You wanna know why I always think I'm right?
(Why?)
Can never accept defeat and let it slide
(Why?)
I have no voice if I don't speak my mind
(Why?)
My weakness is the source of all my pride
I'll tell you why

'Cause I'm a man, woman
Don't always think before I do
'Cause I'm a man, woman
That's the only answer I've got for you
'Cause I'm a man, woman
I'll never be as strong as you

I'm a human, human
A greater force I answer to

Overall Meaning

The Denims’ “I’m Your Man” is a soulful and introspective song that explores the limitations of human nature, particularly when it comes to men. The lyrics highlight the tendency of men to act impulsively and speak without thinking, often leading to negative consequences. The singer of the song expresses regret for his actions and acknowledges that saying sorry may not be enough to rectify the situation.

The lyrics portray a theme of self-reflection and accountability, as the singer admits to being “lost in the moment for the second time” and feeling “pathetic” about his behavior. He suggests that his inability to accept defeat and let go of his pride is the root of his weakness. Despite this, the singer emphasizes that he remains human and subject to a greater force, suggesting a sense of humility.

The repetition of “'Cause I'm a man, woman” throughout the song emphasizes the gendered nature of the issue and serves as a reminder that men should be more thoughtful in their actions. The lyrics also suggest a sense of frustration from the singer’s partner, who wants to understand why he behaves the way he does.

Overall, “I’m Your Man” is a powerful and meaningful song that encourages listeners to reflect on their own actions and behavior, particularly regarding relationships and gender dynamics.
